Property disconnected

    Hi,
    I have a friend considering buying a property that has been vacant for some time. The property had its electric disconnected a couple of years ago due to bills not being paid. The previous owner passed away and a next of kin now owns it. What would have to be done to get the electric reconnected?

    Thank you for getting in touch.

    A general electricity reconnection is €79.45. If a property has been disconnected for more than six months and less than two years, your neighbour's electrician will need to check the wiring and certify the property. He may also be required to send proof of ownership of the property and he will be asked for the MPRN. Once the sale goes through, he should be able to get this from the previous owner or their solicitor as it appears on all electricity bills.

    If the property has been disconnected for more than two years, he will need to contact ESB Networks on 1850 372 757 directly as it would be regarded as new connection. You can find further contact details for ESB Networks on their website. ESB Networks maintain the network for all electricity suppliers. Once he has been supplied with MPRN and filled in all necessary paperwork required by ESB Networks, he can then contact any supplier to request that the supply be connected. Here is a list of contact information for Electric Ireland. Should your friend wish to pay by direct debit and avail of any discounts on his bill, he will need to call 1850 305 090.

    A customer would never be deemed liable for bills that are not in their name, only for billing from the point of the meter-reading that they submit to register their account.
