What's the value of mate's old Golf 1999

    1999
    1.4 Petrol
    NCT expired July 2015
    No Tax
    Flat battery

Its off the road so he should declare it off the road so he doesn't incur additional motor tax fees?

Does he owe tax to the day it crushed or sold if its off the road?

Very little value with no nct. I might offer 400 or 500 if didn't need much to pass the test

If all 4 tyres are good about €500.

If all 4 tyres are good about €500.

If it's not on the road, he doesn't owe tax and cannot be fined for no tax. He will get red letters from motortax people but they will state that it's an offence to use vehicle in public place without tax so if not using it, no issue.
The only issue is if he put it back on the road he would have to pay back tax unless he had it declared off road.

Only if there was €300 cash in the glovebox. It's worth very little, good tyres or not. Without NCT he'll find it difficult to find anyone willing to pay more than a couple of hundred. It's probably worth more as scrap or for parts.

I'm considering buying it as a run around.

Presuming I can get it insured (16 years old now, 17 soon)
I have to get it NCT

Is an NCT possible with out of date tax?

The owners are friends of friends

Get the (possibly unobtainable) quote before you drop a cent on the car.
    Going against you:your age
    age of car
    It's a vw

Edit:I've just realised that you were referring to the age of the car,not the age of your good self!

Or that the quote is affordable (if it comes in below 2k EUR be very very happy).

I definitely wouldn't bring it to the scrap yard at the moment they are paying nothing people are bringing in cars and expecting around €200 which is what is has been in the past . Scrap cars are €50 per ton at the min and your golf is around 1100kg at the most

It's got to be worth €500.
If it was mine I would get it fixed up and you would get more than your money back.

Emissions are high on petrol golfs of that vintage with high mileage, could be a stumbling block for nct.

I definitely insure it and book an NCT for 6am (guards shift change over)
Then in the darkness of night, with all cops drinking tea and discussing what happened on shift with swap over guards ... drive to the NCT centre with no tax ...

Once I have the NCT report I will make good my escape back to base and cover her up if its failed badly, then call the scrap people. if it passes I can get tax forth with.

Its a crazy plan but it might work.

Alt I tax it for 3 mths at 108 euro or so

Sign it into someone else's name and then back to yours .Problem solved no back tax to be paid..Done it myself :-)

Lol are you serious, €50 max.

I'd pay scrap value without an nct on it to be honest.. Maybe 200 if it's clean enough..

A 17 year old VW is gonna be expensive to insure if your under 25...
