    Hi guys,
Just wondering how you know when you have adjusted the star adjuster for handbrake shoes enough.
    Thanks

Firstly make sure that the handbrake cable is fully slack. Then turn the adjuster all the way until the shoes are engaged and the wheel won't turn freely. You then turn back the adjuster a certain number of notches depending on your car and you're done! A bmw 320d I done once needed 9 notches.

You need to adjust them so they're as close to the drum without actually stopping the drum from spinning.

Adjust it the star adjuster. Put on the drum, pull the handbrake up and release it, try to spin the drum by hand. Once you feel resistance you know they're too close to the drum so you adjust it a tiny bit back. Repeat until you don't feel the resistance.

should there be much adjustment to be done on the star adjuster with new shoes, my handbrake seems quite weak, even after tightening at the handbrake

If I fitted new shoes, I'd be firstly making sure there was no lip on the drums, then adjust the shoes an equal number of clicks both sides to start off with. Pump the pedal slowly with the drums on to 'seat' the shoes properly. Then pull up the handbrake 1 notch and see is there any resistance (spinning the drums using your hands) at the drums. If there's not, adjust again both sides until you can get equal minimal resistance with the handbrake pulled 1 notch but no resistance with the handbrake off. This method works for me.
