In the scheme of things this is a small issue. I live in an apartment block and am friendly enough with a guy living upstairs. We don't socialise together but we do have keys to each other's places for tradesmen etc. Anyway he borrowed my iron earlier in the year and gave it back next day. So Friday 13 he asked to borrow my kettle as his wasn't working. No problem. But no sign of it coming back! I texted and got a reply that could he keep it for two weeks as he doesn't drink tea or coffee and will have no use after his brother goes home! Well I do! It's an old kettle but still it's mine. Sorry just venting.

Just tell him you need it or buy a cheap kettle for about €10.

I'd leave him with it. Someone you can trust with a key to your apartment - is worth waiting for the kettle back, just next time be cautious about giving them stuff on loan

When he asked could he keep it for two weeks, what did you say?

So what are you using as a kettle? Tell him to boil water in a pot or buy a kettle himself.

A friendly neighbour of mine asked to borrow my tin opener once, didnt drop it back within a matter of minutes which I thought was pretty rude - like what did he think I was opening tins with while he had it?

Yea that is weird, what did you say when he asked to have it for two weeks? Did you say it's your only one and you will have to boil water in a saucepan now?? Be honest!

Just yell him that you're sorry, but you need your kettle in order to make tea yourself, and that he can buy one for a tenner in Argos for his brother.

"Hey man, would normally be happy to lend you the kettle for a couple of weeks but I'm a tea fiend! If you have a spare pot lying about you could just boil up some water in that. I'll grab the kettle off ya later, cheers".
