E39 to E60

I currently have a 2004 e39 525i sport. Despite my username I don't know a lot about the BMW range, it is a name I used as I registered with the intention of asking about the e39 at the time. Anyway, back to my point I have decided to move on from the e39 even though I love that car. I am sticking with BMW and looking for the most recent petrol e60 I can find, probably 2007-2009. Has to be a sport model and looking at what is available I would imagine I will end up with a 525i again, an automatic, best balance of power and cost. Luckily these cars are going quite cheaply at the moment much better value than the diesels and it won't actually cost me much to move up 4 or 5 years. Has anyone else here moved from an e39 to an e60 and care to share their thoughts, or are there any e60 owners here that would like to enlighten me as to what extras to look for in the car, I am not that familiar with them.

Most people who move from an E39 to an E60 always say the E39 was far better put together and far better handling.

The E60 definitely feels fresher but a lot more bargey than an E39. I love both, owned an E39 and drove many versions of both but lately I'm finding myself wanting another E39 over an E60

I would advise that anyone buying an e60 get it checked by a BMW specialist, its what I should have done when I bought my old 530d.

e60's were facelifted in '07, BMW called this an LCI, look for the more modern gearshifter in automatics. LCI 525i's and 530i's share the same 3 litre engine I think. If you buy '08 on in either of these cars you're tax will be 750quid, which I think is a bargain for one of those, incidently the 530d shares the same tax rate. Obviously this make the 530i the pick of the litter but finding one in Ireland could be an issue.

Just had a little look around and there are no post 08 petrols available on donedeal except one bulletproof one from 2008 for 35k. I am happy enough to go for an 06 or an 07 though. I don't think it would pay me to look to UK for this but I will have a look anyway and do some maths on it.

Not so much about getting cheaper in UK but choice of petrol m sports much higher, taken better care of and better spec.

So if you can get one in the UK, would be worth the hassle in the long-run.

Try to get pro nav system too, leather heated seats etc. Spider alloys are lovely on these too.

I'm freaked, an '09 530i touring, I'd have bought it myself when I was looking recently . Obviously would have to be checked out all over being a UK car.

Thanks, thats the kind of info I am looking for (pro nav system, heated seats etc...). Definitely good options to have both of them, as for the spider alloys, thanks but I prefer the standard wheels on the sport models, but thats just preference. I will have a look at a few UK sites later

I'm not sure but I think the later petrols the ones with efficient dynamics have a bad habit of eating coil packs and injectors. Might be something to look into.

Think that mainly affected the x20i models, haven't heard much about the sixes.

Went from e46 to e60. Have 2006 525i msport at the moment. Great car. Not without its faults, get checked by specialist, Valdas in Dublin would be recommendation. I've had mine 18 months. Front suspension needed bits and radiator went, apart from that never let me down!
