private car - self employed. query

I'm self employed and each year claim a portion of car usage for business.
I bought a new car in 08 and have been allowed 3000 per year x percentage business use against the capital cost of the car. Fair enough.
Now I'm looking at a new car again. There would appear to be a silly loophole in the tax law regarding emissions based cars.
I believed that I had to buy a band a, b or c car to avail of full allowance against capital cost of car - 24000 max (3000 per year)
While it is correct that a b or c is needed, it would appear from wording that the cost of the car doesn't come into it at all. ie if you buy any car within the top 3 bands, the full 24000 is available. This would appear crazy to me however one of the online tax return companies pay sites confirms this calculation.
Anyone shine abit of light on this?
