I am having a bit of bother with my tdi. Last week, starting from cold it ran a bit odd. Like she ran off a cylinder. A little vibration on take off. Once she would warm up she would be fine. This week i had the same. But getting worse. Vibration was constant and constant thubbing (not knocking) as she ticked over. No loss of power and no abnormal smoke. Today after a full refill of diesel and a 200km drive she stopped it at about 120km. Now back to normal. scratching my head as to whats happening.. she passed the nct 2 weeks ago flying..

Could be egr needs cleaning. Hard to know without seeing it but that would be my first port of call. Lots of videos on you tube

Im thinking an injector.. im praying it isnt. They are hard to remove. And costly.

Only way to know for sure is get mechanic to test the injectors. Simple enough procedure so it wouldn't cost much

OP you haven't told us what year your car is but I am going to assume it is newer than 2000 so will be a PD engine.

If this is the case then from your description it sounds like it could be a misfire (most common cause being the injector wiring loom)

It could also be a worn camshaft lobe and hydraulic lifter. Sometimes when these are in the early stages of wearing through the surface of the lifter they can cause these symptoms. A mechanic who has experience of this fault should be able to tell you by listening to the engine.

Not DIY effort, moved to main forum.

If it only knocks when cold and shudders on take off it might be the flywheel.

Just got the diagnostics done. I need a camshaft with hydraulic buckets. All the bolts etc. And i suppose a new timing belt and w pump. Nearly 2k in total.

It wouldn't be any harm getting a diagnosis and quote from an independent vw specialist. Bringing a 7 year old car for big repairs in a main dealer is madness.

I suppose. Any good mechanics in the dublin area independant of gravey trains?

I suspected you might be coming back to tell us that.

You can get that job done in an independent garage for under €1000.

Under €1k is that using genuine parts George?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

No that would be using a mixture of genuine and good quality replacements. For example we would use a genuine timing belt kit and water pump because they aren't much more expensive than aftermarket. However the genuine cam and lifters are mad money so we don't use them. On the flip side there are also very cheap cam and lifter kits available but they are not worth fitting. Somewhere in the middle is the best compromise where you get good quality parts for a decent price.

€1,200 approx would be price of genuine cam and lifters if memory serves me correct, what make cam and lifters ye use?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭George Dalton

What we would use if doing the job:

    Genuine belt kit
    Genuine water pump
    Genuine alternator belt
    Genuine coolant
    INA lifters
    AE camshaft
    Genuine camshaft oil seal
    Genuine tandem pump gasket
    Genuine oil filter
    Fuchs oil

The total cost of all that including fitting would be €950.

also worth bearing in mind the possible oil pump issues on these, any ive found with bad cam bearing wear when doing replacements have needed pumps

Be back to square one without doing the pump for sure.

Any idea of the history of the car from new?
Has it had the right oil and on time?

OP....The answer you need is a few posts above and is less than half the price you have been quoted from VW.

And done faster and to a standard that a lot of people here (myself included) would trust a lot more than VW
