Exchanging Australian licence to an Irish one

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but does anyone know in reality how long it takes to exchange an Australian licence for an Irish one?

Is it instant, ie you take the Irish one away with you when you leave, or does it take days, weeks or months?

And do you have to surrender your Australian licence?

You will have to get a letter of entitlement from the state it was issued from. Now is kind of a good time to do it. The NDLS will be slowing down for the Christmas slump and exchanges will be turned around quicker than usual.

I'd recommend you get some good digital copies of your licence and letter of entitlement and the NDLS will give you a receipt too, so you'll be grand while you're without the licence.

Just a follow up in case anyone finds this thread in the future.

The exchange process was quick and painfree, and my new Irish license arrived in the mail eleven working days later!

The OPs licence was from Australia, do you mean the specific state? Unless from Victoria there are no additional requirements.

See info here for the process and any requirenents:-

Thanks, but I was actually specifically interested in the practical process the OP experienced and followed. My wife has a QLD license close to expiry and doesn't want to be without a licence for an extended period of time.

A Queensland licence would be exchangeable for an Irish licence.

Your wife would just need to do it through an NDLS centre like any licence application as per the link provided. All applications take on average 10 days then before receiving in the post.
