Quick question... My car has been off the road for a number of years now I made an appointment to get the car nct'd the tax is out and I have no insurance my idea is to get insured tomorrow and go to the test centre and see if the car will pass, is it legal for me to drive?

I believe the only exception when taking an untaxed car to the NCT is if it is declared SORD

Statutory Off Road Declaration... if you didn't do it, you'll have to change the owner of the taxbook or they'll be after you for the back tax.

Typical, day of the test and reversed the car into the gate of my house thore a big hole in the side that's not repairable.

Got in contact with nct and I was told they would reimburse my 22€ cancellation fee with proof of the car being off the road.

Here is the problem the car can be sold to a friend of mine for parts but is there any way to get proof that the car is scrapped

AFAIK the only way is to dispose of the car properly at an ATF. Your friend could strip it of whatever parts he wants and bring the shell to an ATF. He may need to pay if the car is stripped of the more valuable components.

It's probably simpler to recoup your test fee by charging your friend an extra €22.
