    Hi there
Am looking for advice am currently looking to trade in my volkswagen passat it's a 141 and was going to change to a 161. It has 80000km on the clock. Garage looking for €10000 to change its a 1.6 tdi comfort line . Am not confined to a passat but would need a car that is economical to run as we would do a lot of mileage. Just wondering is €10000 a lot to change

    Thanks

5 Grand a year in depreciation alone, that'd buy me a whole car and run it for a good few years :)

Most economical option is 99% of the time to keep your existing car as the new card would also depreciate (and the tax or fuel savings rarely come even close to that number combined).

Not everybody wants the hassle of running an older car, especially when doing 40,000km per year.

How much of that is price difference between the new prices of the 2 cars

Do you get additional bells and whistles over the 141 version?

I don't find it any hassle at all when you buy the right motor, you won't be making any money out of me Georgie ;)

Thanks a million for all the replies. We generally change every 2 years due to the mileage. Really looking strongly at it this year due to cost of change and would be open to any make/ model that would be fuel efficient and good for doing high mileage. Concerned about resale value if I move from volkswagen so all advice appreciated.
    Thanks

It's hard to beat VW in terms of getting both good resale value and good fuel economy.

Skoda Superb might be worth a look too.

If you are doing 40,000km per year in a €5k car then surely somebody is making a few quid out of you :p

great economy seeing how they spend most of their life on a tow truck

That's only about 25k miles a year Georgie, no bother to the right motor, and my mechanic charges a very fair and reasonable rate. BTW I hope your Car Valeter doesn't charge too much, some of those cars are absolutely bogging. Shame on your Geogie. :pac:

    That's good for you.

Some people like to have new things as their job may necessitate it. :)

Including fuel tax insurance for a "good few years" over 40k a year must mean you'd be driving some misery box..! :)

Driving them for the last 15 years and never ended up on a tow truck funnily enough. .

I would have thought changing for 5k a year was pretty good going.. With the relatively high mileage and a new model out since your last change.. I've a friend who has a superb high spec and changes for about 10500 ever two years... He does only about half the mileage of the op and keeps his car spotless..

I know you're doing a fair few kms, but think you would do better than 5k a year changing every 3 years instead of every 2. Warranty on VWs has gone up to 3 years AFAIK

    Good point

Should use the warranty and sell at 3, will probably lose less than 15k in value too as you said.

    I would get a Mercedes CLA 180

Alot better looking than a Passat, starts at 31k

I'm not a big admirer of VW but the new passat looks like in class of its own. It is a good looking car and the interior is fantastic. No point of going for A4 and Audi have spotted just that and are releasing the new car for next year. At this moment in time Passat is the best buy imho.

The way the Octy has gone I'd say the Passat now sits directly in between it and the Superb

I don't think there's that much difference between the current Superb and Passat. If anything the Superb is a bit expensive.

Neighbour changes his passat every three years and costs him about 15500

Seems hard to beat 5k depreciation in this segment

I test drove both few weeks ago same day.. I'd take the superb every time..

Just out of an interest...what swings you towards Superb?

Parents buy comfort line passats and It tends to cost them under 14 every 3 years. They do tiny mileage though 50k km over 3 years and yes they do have a diesel.

Felt the superb was a much nicer drive and it's a fair bit bigger than the passat. In fairness the superb we drove was 190 bhp style spec with leather etc.. The passat was comfort line (I think?) half leather on the passat.. The superb was fully loaded with kit.. The passat didn't even have a reversing cam.. I like the look of the new passat.. I guess if I was to choose ordering id say octavia then passat then a4, then superb.. The superb probably gives the a6 a run for its money..

What would I buy if I had the cash? An e class Mercedes-Benz.. After driving one during the summer they are really nice to drive!

That alone almost puts it into the class above

Had they any bother with DPF's, or are the low mileage DPF problems hyped up ?

No issues due to low mileage. I believe it's when the cars have mileage on them and then get driven on all short journeys that the problems start.

Usually they'd do well because there was a good price gap between it and the Passat new. They're pretty much the same price new now though. They are def in demand second hand.

current passat is class above 2014 model. try al hayes motors in portuma he does grt deals . guy in work travels fair distance to buy cars from him . got grt deal trading 2010 passat for new one . al hayes sells cars all over country.

Will the local dealer not try to fleece you then when it comes to service / warranty because you didn't buy it off them ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

Not at all. Most are glad of the work.

Plus it is very easy to compare service pricing between dealers on new cars as everything should be very predictable and therefore can be accurately priced in advance.

If you buy a service plan it can either be linked to where purchased or the whole network. Something to be checked out first.

I'm not sure if the 3 years 161e current offer is linked to one or network wide.

Yep, hence why it's worth price checking against it. In mid level trim is got more toys for similar money. Compared to a comfortline Passat it's got xenon's and heated seats.

True, but a lot of warranty issues can be borderline and down to opinion, and good will often comes into it. Dealers can usually find excuses for any issue. Unlikely they'll do anyone that didn't buy the car off them in the first place too many favours.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

For a service department, all they care about is servicing. If you're a regular service customer they'll try and look after you. The sales dept that didn't sell you a car won't have any input.

I've had vag cover things on goodwill from a different dealer within the network and off another brand altogether. For goodwill outside of warranty they're probably one of the best.

Maybe in a large dealers with a lot of staff, but the smaller dealers don't think like that in my experience.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,580 ✭✭✭moleyv

If its a warranty thing don't they get approval from VW IRL first, and are paid to do the work?

I'd say it doesn't matter to them as long as the work is approved.
