Hoping to get to Georgia next April/May and to visit Russia from there. Like all brilliant people Paper Work does my head in.

Is there a one step method of getting into Russia, ( like a Russian rent a wife scheme at the border), just for a few days.

I don't want to do St Petersburg from Tallinn.

Realise that it is a sensitive border, so visa shenanigans would be problematic.

@Fred Swanson- Thanks for the link; I've never bought a visa in my life, €100 is a fine wake up call , will it go down when the price of oil goes up again.

Having second thoughts now, getting a pain in my head reading all that official sh1t. Maybe after all that 3 day trip from Tallinn doesn't sound too bad.

I did the three day visa free trip from helsinki. The company is St Peter Line. It was fine. But if you want to go in from Georgia, Id just suck it up and get the visa.

if you want to visit Bhutan its $250 per day for a visa .

paying for a visa is normal for the majority of people around the world, its just that having an EU passport often gets you a visa waiver.

Ireland charges €100 for the a visa, the UK $135 which is similar.
So Russia is actually no different than anyone else, its just you are privileged enough as a western european citizen to not notice that these charges exist.

    Russian Visa is easy enough

Get the tourist voucher from the hotel or make arrangement through an agent to get an invite ensure the dates and location match exactly with your application
Make sure you have travel insurance that covers Russia and have documentation to prove this
Postal order for the right amount
Complete the online application form and print out
    2 passport photos

Get the 14 bus out to the consulate and queue up in the time machine out front (loving the sideways light switches)

The DFA very clearly advises NOT to cross the border between Russia and Georgia
    https://www.dfa.ie/travel/travel-advice/a-z-list-of-countries/georgia/

Be warned you MUST register with the authorities when you arrive, a decent hotel will handle this for you but they will want to take your passport to do this. Be sure to carry your passport, the point of entry issued coupon and registration receipt at all times outside the hotel. You MUST present these at the exit check to leave Russia (the official will probably ignore them) but legally you have to have them

Appreciate combined efforts of posters. ;) I stay in hostels or pensions, not hotels. I don't know or have ever had a planned itinerary. Sorry but the Russians are not not getting to share my travel plans as I always follow just my nose, not guide books or guides.
I suppose we are a privileged bunch with regard to needing to pay for visas. We pay one entering Ethiopia, $50 at airport, no need to book hotels in advance and the rest of that fuss. I was hoping to go there more than once, but this burden of officialdom is breaking my b!ts.

you just need to comply with the stated rules and you will be fine when you get there. Its just a hangover of bureacracy of previous times. I wouldnt let it put me off.

You are a guest in the country, no obligation on the Russians to let you in.

So like visiting anywhere you have to follow your hosts rules. The health insurance isn't unreasonable the paperwork for a tourist visa isn't burdensome (just try to get a multiple entry business visa)

    @fits,@Fred Swanson, @goingnowhere
Thanks again for encouraging feedback, does me good reading this positive feedback at 6.00 am. :D Trip is not until next April/May.
I always have a worldwide annual travel insurance policy on the go ( have family in USA )
The business visa thing seems to have a maximum validity of 12 months,:( I still think long time wife-rental is the way to go.:p
