I need some help in making a decision. Any help or insight would be much appreciated !

I have a 2010 Superb combi 1.9 TDI 105 bhp for the last year and a half. I have 2 small children and its a very practical car which gobbles up double buggies and car seats and all that jazz. Wife drives it and likes it. I think it's a grand car but engine would be tame and a bit course but I'm living with it. My last car was a 2006 A4 sline with 2.0 TDI and I miss it. I now realise I should have spent extra and got the 2.0 superb.

Here's the thing. My father in law is selling his high spec 2009 saloon A4 sline auto , black leather, one owner from new. Immaculate. It has every extra as I was working in the UK at the time and I bought it for him over there.

Question is - should I go for style over practicality and sell the superb to buy the A4 . My wife is fed up listening to me and has given me free reign !!!!

    Also should be noted :
I will probably be changing for a 7 seater in 2 years time.

The Skoda has the BXE engine !

I take the Audi will depreciate less ?

All opinions welcome. What should I do ?

Sounds like you have answered your own question. :D

I know !!!! Kicking myself. I listened to my mechanic who said the 1.9 TDI was a much more reliable engine. I wouldn't really go changing the the superb for another one as I will be changing to a 7 seater in about 2 years anyway.

But my father in law lives beside me and I will probably be putting his car up on done deal and taking pics etc so just thought why not sell my own and keep his.

Space wise the A4 is alot smaller than the Superb. The Superb would be similar in dimension to an A6.

But would cater for two small children and two adults comfortably I would imagine .

As Bazz mentioned, the A4 will be notably smaller than the Superb inside space wise and boot space wise. Two adults and two children should be fine though.

What do you reckon the cost to change would be assuming you sold the Skoda privately?

We got a 151 A4 and coming from a Passat it's very small inside with an even smaller boot, rear legroom is a disaster in fact the A3 Saloon is just as big. I would prefer a Suberb any day but the wife loved the looks of the s line.

In terms of space, there is also the much maligned ugly duckling, the Skoda Roomster. Raised back seat a big hit with kids.

Looking at an A6 saloon or combi myself for next year. My dad has an A6 saloon and it has ample room both in the back and in the boot. The A4 is noticably smaller than this.

Mind you, I'll be coming from a 141 i40 which has THE smallest entry to the boot both from the inside and outside!

Since you know the person selling the car load up the Skoda for a trip to the shops, or even better a weekend away, and then see how much will fit in the Audi. It's all well and good having a nice engine but if you can't bring what you need for a few days away, or get the weekly shopping home, what's the point?

You'd be off your trolley. Youd nearly fit the audi in the back of the combi. The 1.9 is a little unrefined ok compared to the 2.0, but 2 smallies and all the associated crap, you wouldn't have a hope in the A4.

So general consensus is to stick with the practical superb estate and let the s line go to a man with less baggage. Think it could be the sensible choice. The Audi is a beautiful car though !!!

Have you driven the multitronic A4? I wouldn't buy one personally, and I am a big fan of autos in general.

Kids that are small enough to use a buggy don't need much leg room in the back. I changed from an A6 saloon to an A4 Avant, and both have enough room for my 2 and 4 year old kids. So the main concern is the boot. Do you really need all that space in the Superb? If you can get the double buggy into the A4, and still have room left over, then I'd say to go for it.

Genuinely I'm mystified as to the appeal of that A4. The driving position is odd, it's front wheel drive it's not the best handling car, the engine is only so so the CVT is ****e compared to the DSG boxes. The space is poor and they're imo bland to look at. Reliability isn't great either. They're over priced. Yet there seems to be constant demand for entry level A4s with S LINE.

When I bought my last Passat I looked at an equivalent A4 and one of the reasons I decided against was because there was almost no legroom in the back and the boot was much smaller.

If you're going Audi get yourself an A6 - I wholly recommend them. Plenty of cabin space and massive boot :)

The OP states that he will be moving to a people carrier but unless you are expecting two more children then the Superb might also fit the bill long term - its not the easiest but I fit two boosters and one child seat in mine

The v tight legroom is a big problem in A4 with kids as it makes it easy for them to kick the back of your seat- this isn't feasible in a Superb unless they have extremely long legs!

I think keep the Superb and invest in a remap which will add another 25bhp for a small outlay

Just to nip this in the bud about the handling comment. Having driven a few, the A4 of that vintage is hardly bad to drive only because it's front wheel drive. A basic diesel one isn't meant to be a drivers car for rallying.

Too many times on here I feel people make fwd to be so completely inferior. In a 120bhp diesel saloon I don't think it makes much odds personally. :)

    Smallies :D

To me it sounds like your heart wants the audi and with an expanding family (mention of a bus in two years) this may be the last chance to go for a car you really like.

That's all this will come down to. The skoda is the more practical option. If you get it you'll still be looking at a4s. If you get the A4 you'll prob wish you had got the skoda as when you have it you'll prob soon get over the honeymoon period with it.

    I actually prefer the skoda

Thanks for the replies guys. Just to clarify :

I already own the superb combi and I like everything about it except the 1.9 engine. Its rough and not that powerful. I have gotten used to the lack of power but find it hard to like the gruff 1.9 tdi. I have a civic 1.8 and that is a dream to drive compared to it.

I don't think it would cost much to change but I'm leaning towards keeping the superb. I would be interested in remapping it. Always was a bit apprehensive about fiddling with the factory settings. Is this silly ? Is it fine to remap the 1.9 engine or would it affect the reliability ?

    Hi George.
What is it about the multitronic that you dislike ?
Am I right in saying you are involved in a VW / Audi garage. If so I wonder what are your thoughts on a remap . Should I go for it or leave well enough alone ?

Also are the BXE engines a time bomb waiting to happen or is that exaggerated ?
    Thanks
