Cognitive depletion / deterioration - solutions?

I work in IT, and my job involves dealing with complex problems at least 40 hours a week. I am truly productive about three or four days a week maximum. The other one or two days, I am finding it hard to concentrate, and make a lot of mistakes. Then I come home tired, and can't think much.

The job sometimes involves things that I am not naturally good at - i.e analytic skills, reverse engineering, attention to detail, etc. However, it also involves things that I can do brilliantly with little mental strain. Overall though, it seems like I have to do a whole lot of mental weightlifting in order to put myself into the right mindset for the job.

Is there a medicine or a drug that enhances analytical thinking? Or is it really bad to push myself in this way?
