    Hi everyone,
I am going to buy a DSLR, finally moving from some old Yashica film cameras, and a Fuji Z20fd compact.
I dont need anything uber profesional, but have been looking at online reviews of the Nikon D300, and it seems a good dependable model. SH prices seem to be running from 400 euro upwards.
However Argos are selling the Nikon D3300 for 530 euro.
I'm tempted by the new camera, with a warrenty, but wonder is there any critical differences between the two, apart from the D3300 having almost double the megapixel's sensor?
    Thanks.
    Nek.

i have a D300, and i've never had an issue with the megapixel count.
i'm not familiar with the D3300, but i suspect build quality and low light capabilties may be two of the main differences.

Build quality and low light capabilities better or worse in the D300, magicbastarder? Is there any reason a 7 or 8 year old camera is still selling for near the price of new models?

I assume the D3300, being one of the consumer models, also lacks an AF motor and an AIS tab. Neither of these things might be an issue for you.

I have a D3300 and it's really good. It has video (1080p, 60fps, auto-focus) which the D300 doesn't although I don't use that much. It has higher resolution (24 vs 12 MP), although this actually means that the D300 has larger pixels. The D300 has significantly better low light performance with ISO 12800 - I've taken excellent pics at 6400. It's also smaller and half the weight of the D300.

The down side is that the D3300 isn't weather sealed and the D300 has slightly better burst mode. The D300 also has more AF points.

    Thanks for the replys, everyone.
I have done a little more research, and am going to see a D300s tomorrow. The extra feature of video capabilitiy is usefull, and I'll still have a quality waterproofed body with all the features I'll probably ever need.

just checked; no motor. this seems to be less of an issue these days though.

It looks like old d300 is still a little bit better in low light conditions (less noise). Not much though.

Bought the D300s this evening. Lens on its way, can't wait.
