    Hello,

I was checking http://www.plates365.com/home/ and they offer a "legal" plate in japan style with 330x178 and I was wondering if they are legal to use, I'm prepairing a car import in Ireland and I was wondering if I need full size of if I can use the small one, or does it depend on the country the car came from?

Just legal in general as in "Written by law"

You'll get away with it in the back of a JDM car.
I don't think they're actually legal, in that you can't fit the current size font on there.

Legally it looks there are two sizes allowed:

    520mm x 110mm
    and
    340mm x 220mm

Additionally, law allows to shrink those dimensions to suit indented place for number plate on a vehicle.

So in other words, you can't use any other size legally, unless your vehicle has a space for number plate which is too small to fit above sizes.

Here's the relevant legislation (see. 17 and 18 and 21).
    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/1992/si/385/made/en/print

Paragraphs 17 and 18 describe legal plate sizes.
And paragraph 21 says the following:
    21. In the case of a vehicle which is provided with an indented space to accommodate a registration plate and the size of the space is such that it can accommodate neither a plate of the dimensions prescribed in paragraph 17 (a) of this Part nor a plate of the dimensions prescribed in paragraph 18 (a) of this Part, the dimensions prescribed in paragraphs 5, 11, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17 or 18 of this Part may be reduced provided that the dimensions as so reduced comply as nearly as possible with the dimensions so prescribed.

On Japanese cars with smaller space for number plate, smaller number plates with smaller font is legal.

Cool. I've had loads if JDM cars that passed ncts. Thought they were a grey area tbh.

In some countries, if you have a JDM car and a standard plate doesn't fit the recess - tough luck, you still have to tack it in to the bumper.
In others you can fit a motorbike plate instead.

    Both look crap.

    Agree.
It's great that in Ireland you can have a plate that fits legally, and not carry regular EU size plate on US or Japan imports like they have to do nearly all around the Continent.

It was UK ruling introduced about 15 years ago allowing for plates to fit the space and Ireland just followed suit.

    Hmm.
Interesting, as legislation I linked above, allows for that, and it's from 23 years ago.

I need it because of the intercooler.. and the bumper I am getting doesnt allow my license at the original position and if I do it will just "hang" there.

an RX7 Veilside bumper on an MX5?

Even if you are 100% using the Veilside bumper, i'd still have it on a tilt bracket in the center. you won't compromise the intercooler to a noticeable amount.

Not original veilside because the MX5 one looks different, but basiclly yes. the RX7 veilside bumper on MX5.

I will check when I have it (3 months delivery time)
