We always had sky box with paid sky but I am considering cancelling it. We live in apartment in Dublin 5 and I can watch freeview on my sky box without the sky subscription

I understand I need to buy different box. Any recommendation for a reasonable prices box?

Will I need to buy aerial as well, which can be tricky living in apartment.

any info or tips will be appreciated.

Should be grand with a basic (i.e. cheap) indoor aerial. Transmitter is on Three Rock Mountain so if you have a south facing room, even better, but things like the thickness of your walls, insulation, might affect it.

You'll get a better answer on the terrestrial forum probably.

I live in Dublin 5 and have rabbit ears for Saorview, works perfectly

What's the make & model of your TV? Its inbuilt tuner will probably do for Saorview, & you can continue to use the Sky box for the free UK channels.

If you have Virgin Media broadband you might not be aware that you can receive the Irish channels (except for the RTÉ News channel, RTÉ Junior and RTÉ1+1), the main British channels (except ITV) and possibly a couple of subscription Sky channels on analog for free by connecting your TV to the cable. This would be the cheapest option if you do have Virgin broadband, as it would require no box whatsoever and any TV with an analog tuner can receive it (pretty much every TV ever sold). But you won't get HD, and the pictures may be a little bit fuzzy. Still worth trying.

If you don't have Virgin broadband, or just want Saorview anyway:

I can't say anything about aerials except that you will need one, I don't know whether you'll need an indoor or outdoor one, check with your neighbours perhaps.

You only need a Saorview box if your TV cannot receive Saorview itself, if it was purchased in Ireland fairly recently, it probably can.

You still need to keep your Sky box to get the British channels, Saorview doesn't carry BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5 etc. You could also replace it with a Freesat box which wouldn't have any of the channels you can't receive on the list.

You could also buy a combo box, this would replace your Sky box and Saorview box (if you need one). It would give you all the channels on one channel list. Almost all combo boxes only give Now and Next program information on the British channels, and almost all have to be retuned when British channels move (not very often at all for the main channels).

If you don't want/need Teletext you could get an unapproved box and receive the Saorview channels on it, this would be a bit cheaper. Most combo boxes are unapproved and therefore don't have Teletext.

No you can't. Freeview is a UK terrestrial service received through an aerial. You are receiving free to air satellite on a sky box.

Maybe, but so called rabbits ears are VHF aerials for DAB and FM radio. The majority need proper UHF aerials.
