NCT Failed on Rear Brake Imbalance

My 1999 Toyota Glanza failed the NCT over the weekend on rear brake imbalance for the footbrake and the handbrake - both on the offside.

I handed it into the garage to get it checked out, and they just said it needs a new handbrake cable. Now this is usually something I would have a go of myself but with the weather being the way it is and the lack of a garage space I said I would hand it over to the professionals.

Is there any part of this brake system that could cause an imbalance for the handbrake and footbrake, but then only needs a handbrake cable as the remedy? Cheers

    I don't think so.

Any ideas what causes an imbalance on the discs? I gave them the fail sheet and they checked it over and said nothing about it. They did re grease the sliders though.

Pads have plenty of meat left on them.

It's possible that one disc is thinner than the other.

NCT don't measure disc thickness, just effectiveness.

It could be an simple as the handbrake cable tightened and a shoe adjusted (if it has rear drums)

I know that. They do however measure the brake "pull" on either side. A badly worn disc can affect that.

It has disc on the back and the handbrake acts on the discs.

Both discs look to be equally worn.

Could it be due to a sticking caliper? Not sticking on necessarily, as its not braking hard enough, but one of the slider pins could be seized only allowing partial contact of the outer brake pad?

It could also be the proportioning valve has failed plus a bad cable.

Unlikely Cj Haughey. Problem with caliper is more likely, slide pins may have been the problem.

i failed on the same last year, and thats what it was ... handbrake section of the caliper was sticking.
