Have you got the silage tested? I would start there and work off that, soya is very high in protein so you may need very little.

Yes Ray,it came back at 70 dmd, as regards the amount of soya needed I'm looking to see how much I can give them to get them growing a frame

For the meal alone you would be looking at your 1kg rolled barley with aporox 11% protien and 0.25kg soya with 48%. The barley is 80% of the mix and the soya 20. So by getting a percentage of the protien from the percentage of the mix above you would be looking at 18.4% overall protein in that mix (I'm open to correction on my maths). Not accounting for what will be out if the silage. Don't think adding any more than that would be worthwhile.

Thanks cc, that's exactly what I was looking for

in plain language this means that for evry 1 kg of rolled barley you could feed 1/4 kg of soya?

You could go lower. .2kg of soya added to 1 kg of barley will still be 17.2%

Ya plain language but now he knows how to up the percentage or go with less and if he wanted to use rolled oats which has higher protein than barley, or mix with beef nuts at 16% protien.

I think you'll find that Barley has the higher protein content

What is the max amount of rolled barley you can feed a 250 kg weanling per day

I thought barley was 11 and oats 13

Should be calculated as grammes of protein per head per day, so you should really know the % protein of the silage. A growing animal is recommended to get 14% protein of the overall diet and will eat c. 2% of body weight in dry matter terms per day. So a 300kg animal will consume 6kg dm per day so needs 840 grammes of protein,14% of 6kg. If you decide to feed 2kg meal then they will eat 4kg silage dm. Say silage 12% protein, that's 480 grammes protein so you now need 360 grammes from the meal. 2kg meal at 18% protein will give that amount. For simplicity I have used meal at 100% dm.

this is becoming very technical for an uneducated farmer. so there would be no problem feeding a 250 kg weanling 2 kg of rolled barley and .25 kg of soya?

Plough on!! That and goodish silage will keep them growing for the winter.

I take it that the silage is around 12% p. 3kg/dm is 360 grammes of p. And you need 700, so your short c. 340 . So yes will get that from 2kg barley and .25 kg soya.

Blend calculator here. You can work out your own mix.

I had the link bookmarked. Wasn't working well the last time I tried it. Had to use an envelope instead.

Would that not get soggy? A scoop might be better

If you feed 2kgs barley and .25% soya meal would you need to feed minerals and vitamins along with that or would a bolus suffice or 60mls growvite do weanlings instead?

Munster, cork based. That's bulk delivered, with an estimated tonnage required for winter given when getting quote from rep. Haven't gotten on to anywhere else yet
