Looking to Switch to a Diesel

    Hi There,

I'm currently driving a 1.4 petrol peuegot 207 and am hoping to upgrade in the new year to a diesel car.

I do about 14,000 Km's a year going to and from work, not including weekend trips etc so I was thinking the diesel would be the more economical option for me.

My budget is about 10/11k after trade in (my current car is a '06) and I would like a Kia Pro'Ceed, 2011 or upwards.

My questions are - is this a realistic budget for what I'm looking for and has anyone here had one of these cars? What did you think?

I've always had french cars and don't know much about the Kia's so any advice would be appreciated!

As in you're spending 10k plus what the pug is worth?

The proceed is nice enough. They tend to be well soecced and the engines are quite robust
Interior isn't up with the best in terms of feel, but you'll have plenty buttons to press.

You'll easily get plenty cars within your budget. You know the proceed is 3 doors. Will that do you for the next few years?

Few years ago I did a spreadsheet if petrol vs diesel, 1.6 petrol vs 2.0 diesel. The crossover point where diesel saved money was about 18kmikes.

Now tax has changed since then but I'd say your milage is still in the petrol range.

Yep, 10k plus whatever I'll be given for a trade in. My 207 is a pretty good spec, air con, electric windows, electric mirrors but there's some rust on the front right wheel arch which will affect trade in value.

My current car is a 3 door so that's not an issue for me. I'm also interested in the regular cee'd or the Hyundai i30, all 1.6 Diesel engines.

I saw a 2012 pro'ceed online for €12,950 which seems to be the cheapest by far. Too good a deal maybe?

I'm currently driving a 1.4 petrol, looking to switch to a 1.6 diesel. I drive on motorway a lot and would travel to my hometown a couple of times a month which is roughly 220k round trip which is why I was thinking diesel would be better for me.

Am I right in thinking diesel is more economical for motorway driving?

Whats your daily commute like, mostly motorway?

14,000km is about 270kms a week, I know that doesnt include your weekend driving but that for me wouldnt justify a diesel (extra cost at purchase and servicing)

In saying that, the Pro Cee'd is a faily robust choice, should see you get circa 44-48mpg if it is motorway driving you do.

Interior is probably less refined compared to some other more "prestigious" brands, but you would be making a good choice re the car.

Yea nearly all of my driving would be motorway. Currently I'm spending €30 a week on petrol driving to and from work and that would increase to above €50 if I drive into Dublin over the weekend or go home for a couple of days.

I had considered an audi A1 also but the only one I saw that I could afford is a 2010 and I was thinking it would be better to move up as many years as possible.

I would say you're right in going diesel. most cars in yhis class are diesel anyway and the petrols arent aby cheaper to buy.

Just wanted to pop in with a quick update. I bought a lovely 2012 Kia Pro Ceed two weeks ago. Thanks so much to everyone for their advice, I'm absolutely delighted with it :)
