Hello all. I am cycling for the last 2 years did 8 k last year and have done 12+ so far this year also done some racing and have been told I should take a break. I must admit to feeling a little bit tired and have a few small aches. What I am asking is how long of break should someone take and should person stay completely idle or go for run, walk, swim etc. Just really wondering what best approach is. Thank you

I'm in the same situation myself but am finding it hard staying off the bike. I've had a bug hanging over me for about a month now, nothing serious but just not feeling right. I think a week off the bike would do me good but i'd miss my commutes to work, even in this wind and always think the day drags in when i drive.

Joe Friel recommends doing other stuff around this time of year (cross training).

Do you mind me asking who told you to take a break and why?

I'm having an enforced break due to childminding duties. Weather here is glorious, and it's killing me!!
I commute by bike and get out when I can for spins (don't race) but sometimes I do feel more jaded, and find a few days off help.

Your body and mind need time to recover/recuperate. Step back fro a week or two and you are unlikely to lose much if any base fitness, any niggles you may have had have chance to sort themselves out, and you come back refreshed and ready to start the whole "cycle" again

I say this as someone who went 3-4 years with little in the way of let-up (except reducing intensity over winter when not racing). The last 2 winters I've been actively encouraged (and to some extent forced to due to injury) to take a bit of a break (a couple of weeks) and am feeling better for it now I am back. Don't feel as if I've missed much at all but do feel I have a head start on my winter training regime because I was (this year at least) able to go into the break at what was essentially my peak condition for the year

Careful you don't make your break too long though - I did the Race around Ireland a couple of months back and ever since finishing I've been unable to motivate myself to do a decent spin. I'm dreading finding out just how much fitness I've lost

There's an Audax Ireland spin going out of Stamullen on Sunday next for a handy 100k. Just the thing to ease you back in...

some of the club guys that i cycle with, they say couple weeks off and come back refreshed and ready to go at it again, they all take 2-4 weeks off. and to be honest i am starting to feel tired and a bit leg weary on a lot of my spins so thats why i asked what are peoples feelings regarding taking time out and what to do while off the bike

Tempting , but it would be 170k there and back. Will think about it!

I usually do between 40-50 km each day Monday to Friday and if i'm lucky then a day at the weekend or evening during the summer. I was thinking about taking a break but having seen how bad the traffic was this morning i would have needed to leave the house about half hour earlier to get into work and then i realized just how much i hate sitting in traffic in the morning
