trying to get a job in a supermarket

I'l try and make this simple, I'd like to work in a supermarket as a customer service(general work), when I do my shopping in them I see ladies about the same age as me(45-50's) and wonder how did they get the job, and there are always different ladies at the tills( I'v been shopping at the same one for years), I have put my CV in at the supermarket and on line (profile). How do they get to know about vacancies. Is it a case of its not what you know, its who you know? Im very frustrated as I am very energetic, and certainly fit enough.
Any advice how to get in some sort of job, say Argos, Pennys.
    Thanks

Argos take Christmas staff most years- you could apply for that and you would then be in a good position to take any longer term positions. A lot of jobs are by personal recommendation so if you have any friends or family working in a shop make sure they know you are interested in working there too.
