My 01 peugeot failed the NCT this morning. Reason was as follows- Visual/Aural Defects, ITEM: Master Clinder/Servo etc (53) DESCRIPTION: Load & break proport. valves REASON: Defictive/Sticking LOCATION: OffsideRear

The Tester said that I will have to get this freed up and have it retested.

Anybody know what this means and is it something I could do by myself?

    Thanks in advance.

That's the proportioning valve, found on most front-disc rear-drum setups. It's probably seized. Just have it replaced, it's not hugely expensive at about €100.

See if the valve has an arm on it attached to a spring .
The arm is attached to the body of the valve with 2 pivots - sometimes these pivots seize and can be freed out .
Could be why the tester mentioned freeing it out .

Okay so I sprayed plenty of WD40 on the pivots and got some movement in the arm but I'm unsure how much movement should be there. The spring is loose also and can slide between the holes that its located in. Should the arm come right out from the valve or should it only move slightly?

Not much travel usually in the arm - the important thing is that it's moving.
I think the small amount of movement is part of the reason they seize up in the first place.
