Are we aiming to burn the most or the least fuel?

Or you are just showing off your fancy trip computer ;-)

Fancy? in a bog standard Focus? Don't most cars have these now? My 2000 Mondeo did!

There's no aim it's just for interest, if you aren't interested to take part, just move on.

My average trip consistently reads between 4.9-5.1 l/100km I reset it every tank. However if you work it out using the brim test 5.6-5.8 l/100km so it's not that accurate about 6mpg difference In old terms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,180 ✭✭✭Mena

No pic but it read 15.3l/100km this afternoon after dropping the young one at drama classes. 9.8l/100km after a drive to France 1000km) a few weeks back which is better!

I don't have a trip computer. I don't even have a working fuel gauge. I just put petrol in it when I think it needs it and generally the amount it takes coincides with the amount of fun I've had with the happy pedal

this is my analogue trip computer. the one on the left is the engine loudness gauge, the one in the middle is the penalty points gauge.

Didn't take any pictures as was dropping it to a customer, but took a Civic 1.6 I-DTEC Hatch from South Dublin to the City North Hotel, Julianstown (so mainly motorway) last week.

Roughly 50km, driving to achieve economy, in Eco mode - according to the on board computer, achieved 3.5 l/100km - that's a shade over 80mpg!

In Eco mode, there are green lights on the dash, that turn blue then red if you aren't driving efficiently, so I was trying to keep them green. Not really much slower than the rest of the traffic was travelling anyway, and I certainly wasn't a rolling road block.

Without Eco mode on, if you want to drive on, there is plenty of power there to have a bit of fun in.

that's exceptional....I got my Focus down to 4.0 on a 35 mile trip, but usually it's around the 5.0 mark with mixed driving.

ROR, what speed did you find the most economical on the Mway? Around 55 mph?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,235 ✭✭✭✭Cee-Jay-Cee

Mine is currently sitting at 9.6l/100km after 220kms.

It was M50 / M1 in rush hour so traffic was only doing about 80kmh anyway.

    No trip computer
    No common rail
    Not much electrics
    Not much in refinement

Agricultural clatter and ear piercingly loud turbo at the front, smoke and cooooo at the back, brimmed tank once a week that lasts on average 700 miles from a 70l tank plus filler.

I like my d-turbo and f*ck what anyone thinks of that :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭Toyotafanboi

    that's it FP :)

my trip computer consists of asking for a receipt in the petrol station and keeping a bic pen in the glove box to use to write my mileage down on it :pac:

That's about right ROR. Folk often say around 60 is most economical but in most cars its less than that. Its actually not much above 40 (but you can't go that slow on an Mway :)). Perhaps for a big V8 it might be closer to 60

My 2006 1.4 Astra only shows kms done since the last reset.

But the most on one fill, about 46L of unleaded, was about 700+ kms. Sligo to just ouside Middleton Co Cork, in and around Middleton, Cork City and Cobh, no refill till I got back to somewhere between Gort and Clairegalway.

    Do I win?

43mpg / 6.6L/100km I don't think youll win with that :) it's fair going in a 1.4 petrol Astra in saying all that.

    68.8MPG over 110 miles.
    Sitting around 66MPG after 350miles.

In fairness, if it was just driving to and from work, it could drop to around 600km per fill.

Something wasn't right... it ws scuttering unburned fuel out the pipe for the last tank, but it stopped as soon as I filled it up again. ****ing hate petrol in this country - it's so variable.

Getting a solid 26mpg in my month old Abarth 595 180 atm aka FIAT 500 Turbo. I can't help myself hooning around the place in it so I suppose the smiles per gallon are good...

Would love to but I don't have a desktop Pc as it's bust and the one at work has all kinds of admin restrictions on it. On mobile devices there doesn't seem to be a way to attach a pic in a post. Not on my Android phone and tablet anyway.

Can get her down to around 6.9-7.2 l/100 on a motorway run... doing local spins is far more depressing (3.0 TDI V6 A6), but she still makes me smile every day over two years later :)

I had the Z brimmed, did 132 miles and it took 40 litres to fill (70 litre tank). Mixed driving (town/country roads/motorway etc). I reckon if I pulse and glide, pulse and glide then slipstream that lorrey infront....

F*ck mpg's and f*ck logical sense. It's a fun weekend car and makes me smile every time I drive it :)

That's not great at all should be doing at least 5.5 l/100km on a long trip like that unless you were driving the ring out of it. In saying all that diesels seem to keep inproving economy wise until they hit 30k km so it should get better.
