Buying a bed and mattress - 2015.

    Hi

I'll be honest, I have never bought a bed. So I have no idea of the cost of them.

    I am looking to buy

    1. A bed frame
    2. A mattress

Bed frame is a base and head board or one of these slate beds.

    And a KING size bed.

This will be the bed for myself and herself in the main bedroom so we are looking for something half decent.

Thing is, I don't have an idea what I need to spend as I have never done this before. I just need to know roughly what I need to set aside.

So in the year 2015, what would one be looking to spend on a decent enough king size bed and mattress.

Is 700 euro a realistic figure or will it be a lot more.

You could get a decent king size mattress for that. A base does not have to be expensive, its really just a platform for the mattress, unless you buy a sprung base. Spend money on the mattress. If things are tight you could manage with a basic base and headboard and replace them later. If you choose to spend serious money on a fancy base then you will have to compromise on the mattress. Manufacturers say you will get 10 years from a good mattress, if you get a quality one you will get more than that out of it.

You should have plenty of choice with a budget of 700

For both or just the mattress?

Evenksjer base, corresponding padded headboard and Hovag pocket sprung mattress is 760 in IKEA. It is a well built and comfortable bed.

The next upgrade is to spend an extra 300 for a mattress with more natural materials.

I bought one of these six months ago.

They have plenty other styles too.

One thing I would say after looking at all the beds available is that it is better if the base isn't solid, ie it is better if it has springs or lathes to provide 'give'.

The whole bed business is very hard for the consumer to understand. Go to a big bed place and the beds always seem to be 'on sale'. It is hard to compare prices between shops because their are so many slightly different types. This is in spite of most mattresses (though not ikea's) and divan bases are made in one factory.

I'd recommend going for a pocket-sprung mattress. Each spring is separate so that when one person moves the movement shouldn't spread across the bed & wake the other person.
Also you can get pocket-spring beds with a memory foam topping. These are super comfortable although the memory foam does make the bed warmer.
I'd vote for a cheaper base paired with a more expensive mattress. I recently saw people buying a mattress because it was on sale - they never even say on it, let alone lay on it. Don't buy without lying on it.

Sorry. I meant to say we are after the size up from king size. So a 6ft bed.

If you put aside 1000 you should be fine.

IKEA has the best value beds and quality is really good. I have had a latex mattress for 5/6 years and its completely perfect still. I don't understand why any one would by a spring. One matter the quality of them. They only ever last 10-15 years. IKEA foam mattress are guaranteed for 20 years

Just got a new mattress the other week & will say it's definitely worth the time trying out a few & shopping around. We got a good deal on a mattress with a certain Mick in Dublin. Spend more on the mattress than the base but if you're going for a super king size, some of your options may be limited as a lot we saw only went up to king.

From personal experience, I wouldn't buy a matress in Ikea, and I also mentioned to friends that I thought this and they agreed. They just don't last, spend the extra money and get a decent one

    Thanks.

In your opinion, what would one need to be paying for a decent mattress ?

If it was me id be putting aside 1-1.5k, ive always bought good beds, you spend enough time in them and if you buy the right one it will last you years.
Something like this to me would be a really good deal for a super king, your getting a really good mattress in my opinion and the base - they are usually sold separate. I actually just bought this brand a few months back, and id highly recommend it, and I also bought it in arnotts (I have no connection). And you are also getting a base with what looks like a nice headboard. 6 year warranty on the base

Of course it depends on your taste.
The super kings are expensive. Just bear in mind there is a lot to be said for buying somewhere reputable.

Have you brought a mattress from IKEA? Did you buy a decent quality one from them? A quarter of Europe sleeps on them. They cant be as bad as you think they are.

Im over 5 years on my IKEA mattress and its still perfect. It hasn't lost its shape. You arent going to get a super high quality mattress and bed for under 700. You will get a fair amount of value for that in IKEA.

My mattress is from Ikea and it's great. Obviously the really cheap ones aren't great but for a few hundred you get a pretty good mattress. The below mattress is pocket sprung with a memory foam top and is probably as good as the OP is going to get:

    http://www.ikea.com/ie/en/products/mattresses/mattresses-toppers/hyllestad-pocket-sprung-mattress-firm-white-art-90258745/

There is benefit to paying more for a good mattress, but to be honest when you hear about some people paying a few thousand for one you wonder what makes it so special. Unless the mattress makes you a freshly ground cup of coffee in the morning I'd be reluctant to spend more than €300 myself.

6ft beds are called Super Kings in Ireland. I got a good deal on one in ez living in Sandyford recently.

Yep, ive had an ikea one before. I cant remember the exact one I had, and it was pricey enough, I didn't go for the cheapest one, it was memory foam, and I just found it lost its comfort after a couple of years. I know the idea of memory foam, but I found it uncomfortable in the bed. Me personally I just wouldn't buy one again for my own bed.

Have to agree with you @johnnyskeleton. I would spend an extra bit on a bed, but also recently heard of someone spending 3k on a bed, defo wouldn't be me, id prefer a nice holiday.

recently bought a bed in the matress factory in tallaght - half the price quote for the exact same bed in harvey norman.

might be worth a look - nice to deal with and charged 30 euro for delivery

Well you need to look at what you are getting. The basic difference between mattresses is the density of the polyurethane foam and the type of springs. More expensive mattresses will also have more natural materials in them or have a layer of memory foam. That is what you pay the extra for.

The Arnotts divan set linked above is a 'value' mattress which is open sprung. There is nothing at all wrong with that if it is what you prefer or want to spend. But a pocket sprung mattress is generally considered to be more comfortable (and is more expensive). I think you'd get pocket sprung for about the same price in IKEA.

Will it last? Depends on a lot of factors. The mattress itself, the suitability of the base for the mattress and the weight of the occupants.

Go superking, the space in the bed is great and if one day children/animals come into your life, there will be loads of room. Sometimes we get 6 into our superking.

Go to some showrooms and just lie on beds, don't make a decision there and then think about it and research best prices
