Research is the cheapest way. Avoid unofficial ticket sellers. Research the show, the theatre (www.theatremonkey.co.uk is a vital tool) and remember that sometimes cheap seats are cheap seats for a reason. Why bother paying to see a show and not being able to see 2/3 of the stage?

TKTS in Leicester Square is one of the main places to get discounted tickets but I've found their selection to be poor lately. I also advise people to skip lastminute.com - used them a couple of times and found them to have bad seats in each price category.

Lately I've found some decent offers on lovetheatre.com

The other option is to queue up at the theatre early in the morning of the show and hope to get day tickets. Beware that these are often restricted view.

Hotel wise. Thousands of them in London, decide where you want to stay and sort the hotels by price. Also consider the Generator hostel..a step up from traditional hostels but not hotel prices.
