Selling a private car to a garage/dealer/trader?

    Hi,

I have a 2009 VW Golf I am trying to sell at the moment I have had adverts up for the last few months but have yet to have any serious bids and a lot of messers. Tempted to just sell it to a dealer or someone just to be rid of it at this stage. I know I won't get as much for it as I would selling it privately etc but if I could just sell it on at this stage I'd be happy enough. Anyone here ever do anything like this before or have any suggestions for me?

I probably have it priced a bit high as it is.

Not that high really price wise do you have it on done deal kind of wasting your time with adverts. I can't see why the car wouldn't sell on done deal looks clean and well minded. If you sell to a dealer you would end up talking several thousand less so better of to hold out on selling it yourself as long as possible.

Ya I always kept it right, perfect service history, timing belt done. Just not getting that much interest. Have it up on donedeal and Carzone aswell.

Given the mileage on it you should mention when the timing belt was changed and what condition the tyres are in, the least amount of money the car needs put in to it on purchase the faster it should sell.

Cheers for the tip, I have a receipt for the timing belt. Must update the advert with that, got a few other bits done also. Have al the receipts. There is a 12 month guarantee on the works actually.

If I don't get a private buyer what would you think the best price I could get from a dealer would be?

Hard to know but it would be a fair chunk less than 10k.

Nice touch using al hayes' pics of 2 years ago in your ad ;)

Seems like a good decent car, would be looking at it myself if it was next year perhaps.

Maybe it's kind of caught in the middle, ie, not getting the 1.6 tdi, small engine minded people, and then you have the people who want the 2.0, but in the gtd spec with the 130 horsies. The 110 seems to be in the middle, and average joe wouldn't bother going up to a 2ltr just for 5 extra hp. That's just my theory behind it.

Keep trying for now, renew the dd add, at 30 odd days, no one will see it, and of they do they'll be more likely to presume it's sold.

maybe leave out that it is a 2.0 tdi , they are known to be avoided, just a thought good luck with sale

I bought the car in Al Hayes two years ago but I put up current most recent pics of the car. I just used them as I hadn't got around to taking pics. I should prob change them. Never occurred to me that would be an issue.

Why are they to be avoided?
The golf doesnt suffer from the oil pump issues that the earlier 2.0ltrs suffered from .

There might be a bit more wear and tear now? It could be perceived as somewhat devious.

Ya I think that is a fair point I'll change those pics today. I actually think my own pictures look better anyway :-)

I updated the advert and added a bit of info on timing belt and other work done to the car etc. Thanks for the tips everyone

The OP's engine is completely different to the older 2.0 TDi engine that suffered from injector problems, etc.

Dealer would probably want it for €5000-6000

Just drop the price a little and you'll get more interest.

Dropped it back to €9750 so hopefully someone might take interest

Iv bought and sold 7 cars now (privately)

Top tips iv found is price it competetivly

avoid adverts like the plague, its full of time wasting children.

A honest well written ad that isnt too heavy on the details, short but sweet i find. Most people only scan through an ad and there are a LOT of VW's for sale out there.

"beautiful silver VW golf in lovely condition, TB done with reciepts......."

List some of the nice things, take well lit pictures inside and out (clean the thing if its dirty, the amount of dirty cars is ridiculous)

And try and avoid talking money over the phone when the calls do come in. If someone is trying to batter you down before they even see the car chances are it will be worse when the suddenly "find" a lot of bargaining chips when they see it. Just say when you see the car you will know its in great condition, then we can talk money.

I can only tell you what iv found based on my personal experience. Hope it helps.

I'd hold out another 2 weeks and see I can't see anything wrong with it. That 2.0tdi engine has zero major issues and I don't see how it would put people off its not a detuned 140bhp engine rather a gap fill engine used by vw during 2009 when 1.9tdi production had finished and while they were waiting to replace it with the 1.6tdi engine. It's cheap tax so I can't see any issue with it being a 2.0tdi. I'm surprised it's hasn't sold tbh.

Don't take any offers over the phone, tell them your not Ebay. Fookwits making blind bids over the phone without actually seeing the car are a waste of time, they will sometimes want you to hold a car they either have no intention of viewing or will arrive and then try to bargain you down again. Nobody in their right mind would buy a car over the phone.

Ah no I would never accept an offer over the phone he was saying he had to travel a big distance and he wanted to have an idea of a price in his head before traveling. He wouldn't go past €9000 on the phone anyway so it wasn't to be.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,283 ✭✭✭Deedsie

Dropped it back to €9500... Gone a bit quiet again. Strange. Any other websites other than Carzone, donedeal and adverts I should put it up on?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭_davidsmith_

Is it on autotrader? In my experience donedeal has been the best for private selling, and patience is key here, if your in a rush to sell that will impact the value on the car i.e the car is worth 9500 to someone in the not to distant future. But if you needed it gone today you would need to attract someone who is not exactly after a golf to buy this €8000 bargain motor.

If youre not in a mad rush just leave the ad there, maybe bump it up every couple of weeks. There is a buyer for every car you just have to wait for them to want to buy it.

He knew your price from the ad. Your job is to get him to view the car.

On price always say "there's a small bit of wriggle room and we can discuss this further when you see the car".

    This ^

Get people out to look at the car. People go all funny when they sit into it and can see themselves owning the car. Tell them there's wriggle room, but you won't take any offers until they see how nice the car is.
It's easy to be a hardman negotiator over the phone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,283 ✭✭✭Deedsie

Two guys were supposed to come view the car this evening. They both rang me to say they bought elsewhere earlier today.

    Just venting my frustrations now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 73,520 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

It's a numbers game. Don't be disheartened. It's got better spec than a lot of Golfs out there.

I would suggest a few changes to the ad though.

Don't blur out the reg, this puts buyers off as it looks like you're hiding something.

Don't go into much detail about repair work done. This could actually out people off.

Really appreciate you taking the time to do up that Colm. Very sound. I'll owe you one if she sells after this :-)

    Fingers crossed.
