Dont know if anybody mentioned this yet....The here maps survey of Ireland seems to be taking place at present.

I saw the Here Survey Car in Kilkenny yesterday evening surveying the road. It's a UK Reg navy blue motor with a box on the roof and warning signs at the rear.

Roof mounted Box looks like a camera rather than a GPS unit.

Here nature was bought by BMW Audi and Co so in case this survey data will make it's way into those manufacturers making systems in upcoming models.

It's probable that those car manufacturers previously got their data from them anyway, even before they bought them. Prior to them becoming 'Here' after they were bought by Nokia, they were known as 'Navteq' who supplied data for most of the in-car Satnavs and Garmin. If there is a camera in the GPS unit it's probably to capture images for the 'junction view' function that's in Garmin satnavs at least and maybe others.

hope its for the junction view, aka Lane Assist.

Its the one big thing that is missing on the here app, whether thats due to lack of info on the ground or just them not bothering isnt clear.
BTW, its also not available abroad, so its not just an irish thing.

Junction View is already available on Garmin Satnav's, and they also get their data from Here (previously Navteq) so the data is already there. Lane Assist is something else, although it uses the same data, and is also available on some of the newer Garmin's.

Whether they decide to put either of these onto the Here app is another matter altogether. I'm guessing they won't as it's possibly a feature that Garmin pay them to provide data for and giving it away for free on an app wouldn't please Garmin.

Wouldn't be surprised if the Conglomerate of Car Companies are bypassing Garmin/Navtek sokution qnd will use the data themselves. Sell it on to Garmin if they want to buy it. The day of 3rd party GPS is nearly gone. If the car companies create a decent enough mapping system then this could be one of the last nail in the cofffin?

I reckon we are seeeing the start of the days of built-in sat nav or a separate unit stuck on the windscreen. Given smart phones and screen mirroring (Apple car play for example), users can simply control and mirror the smart phone from the car and use Google Maps (other open source mapping options are available) for navigation (while streaming music).

More and more price plans are giving unlimited data, making this more feasible.
