JD 2130 tractor sitting up for 4 months, when started was a bit rough going with sparks out the exhaust and losing little power.
Again started this morning and started ok but then cuts out,

Id check the diesel if it was me.
Maybe water in diesel , drawing air , blocked fittings or filter, ie engine not getting diesel

thanks someone suggested a cracked piston could be the cause, sending some sparks out the exhaust

A lot of sparks or only the odd one. I know a good few tractors which throw out a few sparks. Most exhausts have spark arrestors built into them , then they rot and let sparks out .

A compression test will tell if there is a cracked piston.
Or is there an almighty blow from the engine breather or the oil filler .
The engine will run on 3 cylinders so the fact that she is cutting out would tell me its more than a problem with one cylinder

9935452 how will a compression test conclusively prove a cracked piston?

Well in this case if the piston is cracked badly enough for it to be throwing sparks out the exhaust a compression test should show that that cylinder is down on compression.
And i never said 'conclusively prove '

You posted clear enough that it will be a cracked piston, see post 4.

Maybe it's a crank problem. Your posts appear to be a bit cranky anyway.
