I have an 05 Avensis 1.6 vvti but lately I can't get high revs on it, the highest it will go is up to 3,000 revs, although this doesn't happen everyday but in saying that I don't do much driving, it's not showing any faults on the diagnostics, if anyone is having the same problem or has fixed the same problem could you let me know what is causing it plz, all answers would be appreciated

Crankshaft position sensor causes this on those engines, I believe. Not a big or difficult job.

Did you scan it yourself, or a mechanic?
I assume there are no special lights lit on the dash?

    Fuel filter.

    Fuel filter.

A blocked fuel filter would affect it under load, but is unlikely to stop it revving in neutral.

What led you to conclusion OP can't rev it without load?

    No mention at all.

There isn't enough information in the OP to accurately state whether it's the crankshaft sensor or fuel filter that's at fault.
