How to enter GPS coordinates in a Garmin Nuvi?

    Hey all

    Can anyone help me with the above. I am finding this device very user unfriendly.
    I don't use it that often.

    I am trying to enter coordinates for a place into the coordinates search but there doesn't seem to be enough character spaces to enter the gps.

    Any guidance?

    Thanks

    You might need to select a diffferent format for entering the co-ordinates.
    To be honest, I just use Loc8 codes with mine.

    I tried the different formats but none worked. I don't understand why there isn't just one universal format.

    How do you enter loc8 codes on the nuvi?

    Put them in where it says 'Postal code'.

    For example Tayto Park's GPS code is the following

    GPS: 53.542679, -6.462815

    However I can't enter codes like that no matter what format I select on the Garmin.
    There must be something I am doing wrong.

    There must be because I have a Nuvi and can enter such codes no problem.

    Do you see the Coordinates Icon? (Bottom right on the 3rd screen under "Where To?")

    The Loc8 for Tayto Park is NTF25NM9 if it helps.

    These are the options I have for GPS format

    h ddd.ddddd°
    h ddd° mm.mmm'
    h ddd° mm' ss.s"
    US National Grid

    None of the above 4 match the format given for Tayto Park. Just using that as an example.

    Hit "Where To?
    Use arrow on bottom right to scroll down to 3rd page.
    Coordinates should be the bottom right icon.
    Enter the coordinates in the two lines provided.

    Your screen must be different to mine.
    When I click 'Where to?' I get a screen showing Go Home Address Petrol Stations Shopping Restaurants Personalise.

    I added the coordinates icon to that screen myself by creating a shortcut to it.

    When I click on coordinates I get a screen with

    N 53°51'18.5"
    W 009°17'50.4"

    Doesn't the first format in that list (decimal degrees) match the format you have above for Tayto Park?

    Under settings are you set to Ireland?

    You should have been able to scroll down to Coordinates using the arrow key on bottom right.

    But if you have that icon, just tap on the line and edit in the numbers you want.

    But that is my problem as I said earlier.
    I don't seem to have the matching spaces for the gps code.
    Maybe it is a simple setting I need to change.

    Where do I do that?

    It would depend on the model, but the same place where you choose km or miles and the currency for the fuel costs.

    The first one above and last one in the image below is decimal degrees and matches the Tayto Park format.

    nuvi250w_04.jpg

    W = -
    E = +
    N = +
    S = -

    So you should input:

    N 53.542679
    W 6.462815

    If you tap on the line with the numbers, it should bring up a number pad. You can use the pen symbol on top right to delete what's there and then just enter the new numbers you want. Then hit Done.

    Another option:

    Settings
    Units & Time
    Position Format
    Co-Ordinate Format --> UTM (Universal Transverse Mercator) which automatically changes Datum to European.

    Then when entering addresses it recognises where you are and only asks or LOC8 codes as opposed to GPS co-ordinates.

    ^^^ Well my SatNav does anywhoo,
    Hope that helps,

    But for the W gps code I only have 5 spaces for digits whereas the code above has 6 digits after the dot.

    Don't worry, that's just for accuracy, but that extra digit is only the difference of a meter or so, the 5 digits will still get you there :)

    Never knew that. I think that might be it.

    Funny the hotel I am looking at has an extra 2 digits at the end of gps coordinates. Maybe it will take me straight to the bedroom!

    Thanks folks for help

    +1 I've seen websites with 15 decimal places, you'd need to be aiming to hit an individual blade of grass to require that level of detail. Five decimal places as cormie said will get you to within one metre of your target.

    Glad you got it sorted. I wish everyone just used decimal degrees, I use them all the time, you can get the coordinates of any location by right clicking on Google maps and selecting "what's here". Just always make sure you've entered them correctly into the GPS as one character mistake could take you half way around the globe :)
