VRT Rebate query

I've got a question on the VRT rebate for exporting a car permanently from the state. I've seen a few threads have been done on this before but none answer my question.

I'm currently living and working in Ireland, but as of next week I'll be moving to the north. I've found a car here, checked the VRT rebate and its a great deal. But my question is this, if I export the car, move residency from the republic to the UK am I still eligible to get the VRT back?

My understanding is that the VRT won't be paid until the car is registered in the UK, if I register the car in the UK then I'll need to be resident in the UK so will no longer be resident in the republic so no longer eligible for the VRT rebate.

Sorry if that's confusing, but if anyone has done this before please let me know. Always nice to get money from the govt. And don't worry, its not a cool big engined car leaving Ireland, its an Audi A3 1.6 FSI, most petrol heads will be glad to see it gone!!

Yes you can. I moved to the Netherlands and took my car with. I reregistered it here in NL (took me 4 weeks or so), sent the documentation across and had it sorted (paid out) from revenue within 3 weeks.
