Car hire for 3 months

    Hi,

Looking to hire a car for my wife while i'm studying in another part of the country for 3 months. Did a quick scan of car hire sites and seems renting for more than a month isn't always possible. It's also really expensive.

Car leasing is something that i also thought of but think that can only be done through a business which is not an option for me.

Thanks for any info/tips on this.

    Buy a cheap runaround.
    Tax it for 3 months.
Insure for a year and cancel after 3 months.
    Sell runaround.

If you look in Buying forum the is a bangernomics thread there with cheap cars.

For a tax based reason you cannot rent for more than one month, otherwise it becomes a lease with different VAT. It shouldn't be really expensive in November. It may be expensive around Xmas, it shouldn't be very expensive in January or February.

+1 That seemed to be the situation as well in the US a few years back when I had a car for 6 weeks on a work project - I had to bring the car back to the local Hertz office after a month to do a new rental agreement, it took about 10 minutes when I said I was happy to hang on to the same car and didn't need it valeted.

OP should consider rolling the rental/hire from month to month i.e. just ask for a one month rental and tell them that when he brings it back after a month he will be looking to renew the rental immediately.

A cousin of mine rents for 3 months each year. About 10 years ago, they told him that they would have to rent on a month by month basis.
At the time, they just took care of the paper work in the background and it made no difference to his rental. In more recent times, they now make him swap the car each month but there is certainly no issue in getting a rental like this.

Rental Car companies can rent to you for 3 months, no problem, you will have to change the car every 30 days thats all.

If a registered short term car is rented for over 30 days the car hire company has a different VAT rate and more importantly they loose most of the VRT rebate they get.
