XC90 D5 owners or experience?

    Hi,

I am looking at 7 seater SUV’s and am leaning towards a Volvo XC90 D5.
I have been offered a good deal on a 2007 car, but its quite leggy at just 150k miles. Was a very clean car with only some minor issues that would be sorted prior to sale..tyres, one or two minor marks.
    Link here.. https://cars.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/volvo-xc90-2-4-diesel-automatic/10601421

Anyone know the dealer or the car?

Ive driven it and it felt rock solid, shifted smoothly and felt well tight.
Its higher miles than I would expect on a 2007 car, but a lot of the XC90’s ive looked at are 130k+ for 2006/2007..
We don’t do much mileage anyway, so would be adding between 5-7,000 Klms per year to the car and would be buying it as a keeper..Keep it well maintained and hold onto it for the foreseeable..

Anyone here owned or had much experience with the XC90 D5? How do they handle the mileage? I have seen UK examples with +300,000 miles on them?
A google of owners forums throws up no end of complaints about wheel bearing failure (I can live with) but more seriously gearbox issues, but that seems to be more common on earlier cars with the GM sourced gear box? Anyway to tell if this one is the upgraded unit?

Basically leaning towards doing the deal on this one and looking for some feedback on longevity and build quality for these units and those miles..
Any Volvo indies or friendly garages recommended for a PPI on it?

    Peter

Hi, I like the XC90 and went shopping for one specifically because it is a seven seater. However after climbing into and out of the back row I when off the idea. While a spry 12 year old could manage this without too much difficulty, a fully grown adult will struggle.

If you only intend the back seats for children old enough to be trusted to belt themselves in correctly then you should be OK. Try before you buy.

Yeah thats fine, but a valid point.
For us, the rear seats would only be for occasional use and then only for kids. But I am really interested in the longevity of these motors, is a 150k miler past its best.. Is the gearbox used in the D5 a better unit than the earlier petrol versions/GM units or will it still break my heart.

Tyres, fuel consumption, servicing costs etc I can live with.
A 4/5,000€ gear box repalcement i would prefer to avoid..

    150k miles done in 8 years time....averaging 18k miles per year...total freakout...only in Ireland :pac::D

I think 10grand is a little strong for that. You identified the fuel consumption and tires and are not expecting to run a premium 4x4 like this on peanuts. So that is half the battle.

The wheel bearings are an easy fix. So that only leaves the box and I think this was well sorted by 07. They are fairly bulletproof volvos other than that. But I'd only go to about 9 for it.

I surprised no one has mentioned that its a diesel so could give problem with such small future mileage! Or is that only on cars with DPFs (does this have a DPF?) ??

I don't think the box on the xc90's is an issue, as it has a radiator, the xc70's with the same box didn't have the rad and suffered issues..
