Getting new clubs, fitted or not?

    Hi guys,

A friend of mine is going to join my club in the coming year, he has been playing for years on and off but never seriously and never as part of a club. He is a very big hitter and has an old set of clubs from when he was a teenager. His partner wants to get him new irons and woods for Christmas and has asked my advice. I have obviously said to bring him and let him try them out and see what suits him. My question to the wise boardsies is should I advise her to have him fitted or buy off the rack for the minute.

    Thanks in advance

    Blindside

If they are going to the expense of buy new irons and woods, then definitely get fit for them.

Thanks for that, would you recommend fore golf or McGuirks or who?

All depends on budget really. If she wants to get something cheap(ish) now would be a good time with a lot of next years stuff being released. Last years stuff will be on the shelves. More than likely the only choice he'll have is the shaft flex. If expense isn't an issue then obviously get fully fitted.

I've used Fore Golf and found them excellent. But I also know people who got fitted in McGuirks (at least for a driver) and they were very happy too.

For someone who intends to take the game seriously and who has some potential, I'd spend the extra few bob and have a full diagnostic with Fore Golf. You don't have to buy the clubs there if you don't want but the analysis is really valuable.

But anything is better than buying clubs off the rack because Adam Scott or someone uses them. That is just stupid.

Thanks for the input. I've never been to fore golf but have been to McGuirks so I wasn't sure what the selection was like in fore golf. Do you mind me asking is it much more expensive to get fitted?

I think they charge €100 for a one hour fitting (whole bag). After that its up to you if you get them to custom build them for you or you just go and source the right spec somewhere else.

There's a good bit of information on their website.
