Renewal of drivers licence

Hi I discovered yesterday that my B licence category is due to expire at the end of the year. I also found out that I have to renew it in person at one of these new licence centres. Not entirely sure what the logic was behind that but as of last August I am living in Florida. Ordinarily, I would say big deal and just work away on my US licence (assuming I pass my driving test next week!) when i return to Ireland for visits. However, I still have property (and a car) back in Ireland and I have passed a test in every category which I think is too much just to let slide for fear things don't work out here and I have to go back commercial driving in Ireland. How long after my car licence expires do I have before I have to reset a test (my truck and bus categories are good for another two years)?

The category has to be lapsed for 10 years before it's no longer renewable. Be mindful of the fact that this goes for categories you didn't have on the last licence. In other words, if you didn't have your truck and bus categories on the last licence (maybe you weren't driving for a living and didn't need them) then these categories might be in danger of becoming non-renewable sooner than the group 1 categories.

If your last licence had all categories included then just renew it next time you're home on holiday- you have a decade. Just make sure you have a valid address and valid proof of that address and don't let on that you're not resident at the moment. Your US licence will be valid here as a guest anyway so you can still hire a car at the airport when you get home, assuming you pass the test.

You probably know that there is no exchange agreement between the US and Ireland so they won't recognise any of your group 2's anyway and your entitlements here will have no bearing on your US entitlements and vice versa.
