Why are the Jacksonville Jaguars so bad?

Okay, so they won today against the Bills but the Bills threw the game away.

Out of the expansion franchises Panthers, Texans and the Jags, the Jags haven't even made the playoffs in the last two decades.

They continue to get draft picks early in the drafts every year but nothing seems to be working.

So I'm just throwing out this question to see what you guys think.

    Poor management

Failure to draft, and in particular to draft a good quarterback. Losing becoming a habit probably hasn't helped. Even their good players like blackmon were troublesome. Something about Florida...?

Out of the expansion franchises Panthers, Texans and the Jags, the Jags haven't even made the playoffs in the last two decades.

Wikipedia says they've made the playoff 6 times
    Playoff appearances (6)
    NFL: 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2005, 2007

Mind you once in the past decade, but there on par with the panthers in all time playoff appearances albeit Panthers have been more successful during the Jags decline and Texans lagging miles behind in playoff counts.

    Panthers
    Playoff appearances (6)
    NFL: 1996, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2013, 2014

    Texans
    Playoff appearances (2)
    NFL: 2011, 2012

Don't get me wrong here, I don't ever remember watching a good Jaguars team, haven't been watching long enough to see any of those Jag playoff teams but it does seem to be more a case of what has happened to cause them to regress so much from the initial decent run to where they are today.

Because when they get good players the good players either go off the rails or are the only good player they have with no help. Eventually they will sell the farm for a team

  • bad drafting for the most part. they've actually drafted pretty decently recently the team they have now has some potential so we will see

    Some teams just institutionally suck.

Jacksonville are one, Cleveland could be considered another, the pre Kraft Patriots were one.

Matt Williamson on the ESPN Football Today podcast often talks about his time as a scout with the Browns.
One reason he gives for their failures was because they were constantly hiring and firing coaches, assistants, scouts, traveling secretaries, etc
There was no contiunity in any aspect of the organization and they were constantly going back to square one.

I'd imagine it's something the same with Jacksonville

I knew I should of checked Wikipedia just to make sure of their post season record.

Since I have been watching American Football since 2009ish the Jags have been the whipping boys of the NFL.

Is it because there is 3 teams in Florida State
Dolphins, Bucanneers and Jags and college football is big in the South too many teams.

Year, after year, after year, after year of poor drafting and personnel decisions. It's not a great barometer at all I know, but for example the last player they drafted that has made a Pro Bowl was back in 2006.

They've also had some bad luck - Blackmon could have been superb but was a mess off the field, Dante Fowler suffered a season ending injury in his first practice. They're 2 high first round picks.

I've liked their last couple of drafts. I honestly thought they'd have developed a little bit quicker at this stage under Bradley (and lets be honest, they definitely should have, there's no excuse there) and felt they could have been one of the more improved teams this season. I'll have to wait another year for that prediction :pac: but it seems as if they're going to give the current setup as long as possible to turn things around. From NFL.com:
"I'm told by sources informed of the Jaguars' thinking that Gus Bradley is safe, not just this season, but, barring a 1-15 type collapse that would feature a player mutiny -- essentially like the Dolphins had -- Gus Bradley will be safe for next season as well," Rapoport said. "The reason why: no one with the Jaguars thought this would be just a three-year rebuilding process.

"Bradley may have taken over the worst roster in the NFL, so they are going to exhibit patience with him and with their regime. They fixed the offense this year, expect them to focus on the defense next year."

I always remember the Jags being in the Playoffs because of this

I'm open to correction on this but I think they made back to back AFC championship games in the late 90s with Tom Coughlin as coach

They definitely made it to the 96 Championship game, losing to New England, but I'm not sure about the 97

That's kind of interesting, neither the Jags nor the Bucs have made the playoffs since 07, the Dolphins since 08.

Also, had a quick look at the Bucs wiki page, check out the first line. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tampa_Bay_Buccaneers

The dolphins I blame coaching more than the team tbh
