VW Polo 6N clutch high and very stiff?

I've lived with this problem for 30k miles (car 90k plus) and its not got any worse so I doubt it is the usual fractured weld problem on the pedal box that the 6N and all its relatives suffered from.

However I'm still thinking of replacing the pedal box or at least stripping it out to take a look because I'm wondering if its been repaired badly in the past?

But before I do that I wondering if there is another problem. I have the bottom of the dash out, can see where the clutch cable comes through to the pedal and I'm wondering if the cable is attached correctly. The cable terminates in a plastic "hook/loop" that is just slipped over the end of the relevant part of the clutch pedal however there is also a notch which looks like the cable "hook/loop" should go into but its just too small?

btw reason for getting it fixed is so that someone can learn on it. No way could a learner be expected to drive it as it is.

Edit> At this stage I'd be happy if I could find a picture of how it is fitted online just to confirm its right or wrong?

Edit2> Nearest picture I can find on line is the 5th one in the 3rd post at http://www.seatcupra.net/forums/showthread.php?t=228099 my clutch cable doesn't fit in that notch. The cable hook/loop looks slightly different as its longer but I think the one in the picture is foreshortened by the angle of the camera?

So tell me is this right or wrong?

Just looks wrong to me but thats how the old clutch that I replaced about 30k ago was fitted and I still have it so know its not got a loop on the end that will fit the notch you can see. Dealer also insists that is the correct clutch cable part.

Car is actually a 6K2 afaik and not a 6N as per the title

I know the dealer insists that its the correct one but from my 20 years experience with a Mark 1 Formel E Golf I know that it was vital that the correct (VW) cable was fitted otherwise it resulted in a very heavy clutch, it may be the same for your Polo so be absolutely sure that the correct one is fitted, once you are convinced of this then you can look elsewhere for a solution.

Thanks, I will check again, but I put on a new one as a first fix 30k ago and it was identical to the one I took off. I also bought a spare as I thought with all the pressure I have to put on the pedal it might go again, the spare is identical. Even the pictures of the ones I can find from looking the part number up from the reg online are identical.

The problem with the non VW cable was that it was very slightly shorter than the proper spare even though it looked identical, I knew a few people who got caught this way but if you are happy that the cables are identical then the problem is obviously somewhere else.

The problem is the experts tell me its the classic VW/Seat pedal box issue and that the pedal box needs replacing/welding up.

Cables are all VW dealer sourced parts, but even if they were the wrong lenght or had the wrong clip on the end I'm not sure that would alter the pedal geometry enough to change anything.

I'm back thinking it might be the clutch or release bearing which unless it gives out won't be changed in a hurry.
