I found today's Gospel passage from Mark 10, quite poignant when I read it . . .(thank you Manach for posting it)

Bartimaeus, a blind man, the son of Timaeus,
    sat by the roadside begging.
On hearing that it was Jesus of Nazareth,
he began to cry out and say,
"Jesus, son of David, have pity on me."
And many rebuked him, telling him to be silent.
But he kept calling out all the more,
"Son of David, have pity on me."
Jesus stopped and said, "Call him."
So they called the blind man, saying to him,
"Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you."
He threw aside his cloak, sprang up, and came to Jesus.
Jesus said to him in reply, "What do you want me to do for you?"
The blind man replied to him, "Master, I want to see."
Jesus told him, "Go your way; your faith has saved you."
    Immediately he received his sight
and followed him on the way.

It also reminds me of the passage in Matthew 7:

Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. “You parents—if your children ask for a loaf of bread, do you give them a stone instead? Or if they ask for a fish, do you give them a snake? Of course not! So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask him.

So what do you want God to do for you ?

What I want is what is written in the gospel scripture that you posted.
Jesus, son of David, have pity on me

Why do you feel the need to be pitied?

Remind me again, who here asked you.

    Who here asked me what?

I asked a perfectly simple straightforward question relating to something you posted. I am interested in why, of all the things you could possibly want God to do for you, you seek pity?

To give me the grace to understand what God wants of me. That's all.

He's already done more than I could possibly ask by sending His Son to die for me on the cross.

This finite action enables sinners to be redeemed and walk in the presence of the Most High. An amazing thought. I can look forward to an eternity in the presence of God because of the free gift of salvation that is only possible by Jesus death.

For me, the question is Lord, what can I do for you?

Its a pity the passage translates The Holy Spirit as "good gifts" . it robs the passage of meaning.

For OP's query it would a case of
    Non nobis, Domine, non nobis,
    sed nomini tuo da gloriam.

Hi King of the Hotcups. It sounds like you are going through a really rough time and need someone to talk to. I don't know your circumstances at all, but perhaps sharing your feelings with a close friend or family member who you can trust to give you the right support and advice would help. If there is no one you feel that you can/want to talk to face to face, then Samaritans have a free number and are a 24 hour phone counselling service that deal with depression and suicidal thinking. Their number is 116 123. They should be able to provide you with support and advice on what could be helpful in your situation. Always remember that no matter how terrible things feel at the moment, things can and eventually will get better and it won't always feel as bad as it does right now. Suicidal thoughts should never be ignored, so please talk to someone soon. Take care and stay safe.

I don't know that that's a translation issue, Lylah Bewildered Puppy. The Greek text here has agathá, which means "goods" or "good things". The same word is used in the Parable of the Rich Fool in Luke 12 ("Then he said, ‘I will do this: I will pull down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. And I will say to my soul, Soul, you have ample goods laid up for many years; relax, eat, drink, be merry"); in John 5 ("Do not be astonished at this; for the hour is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice and will come out—those who have done good, to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil, to the resurrection of condemnation"); in Romans 3 (“Let us do evil so that good may come”); and elsewhere. So it can mean "goods" as in material possessions, it can mean good deeds, it can mean good outcomes.

You might interpret the word in Mt 7 as referring to the Holy Spirit, but that's not a translation issue.

If you are not already doing so, I would strongly encourage you to talk to your doctor about how you are feeling.

Struggling with mental illness does NOT mean you are sinning. It means you are not well, and God would want you to seek the help of medical professionals to help you get better.

    Hi King of the Hotcups,
Please know that you do not have to deal with this on your own.

We encourage people experiencing difficulties to talk to someone they trust and, if appropriate, to go to their GP. If you need help urgently and outside of GP hours, please go to your nearest A&E department.

Here at Boards.ie our moderators are not trained to support people experiencing difficulties. There are other organisations better positioned to provide specialised support. I think tatranska's confusion here has resulted from a very similar saying in Luke 11:13 where Jesus spoke about God giving the Holy Spirit to those who asked Him. The passage here in Matthew, as you point out, is quite correctly translated as 'good gifts' or 'good things'.
