    Hi Guys,

Does anybody have one of these? I just bought one today. Still finding my way around it.

Anything that gives trouble, things to look out for etc.

    Thanks a million.

Good bus, they don't like cheep back end oil put the good IH stuff in the back when your servicing it.

Check the engine oil for cream, they tended to go pores but she's probably had new liners by now.

Best of luck with her, stock up a picture of her in the machinery thred.

good reliable machine & imo pound for pound would leave most tractors in it's hp category sitting both for traction & torque

what cab is it some of the white roof XL were prone to leaking & see some rusted fairly bad at this stage

hand brake failure is common & is an expensive fix , gear selectors occasionally act up

we have an 885 here with 22k hours & not using a drop of oil on original engine injectors or pump never touched

bought it in England about 1994

    Thanks orm0nd.

I posted this twice by accident. I'll move to the 785 xl thread.

Handbrake is not working well alright. Sunroof needs rubber lining. Oil needed to free the levers that weren't used, differential lock seized. Anything that was used is working well.

It's a smashing tractor to drive, need to get used to gears but drove it 40 miles home.

I'm not allowed to post links or pictures but I'll take away the WS at the start and post the link in the International 785XL link

Best of look with her. Looks value. Annoys me when sellers put SOLD on adds instead of just taking them down.

    looks very straight & original,

cut a plastic bottle & put it over the diesel filler cap Thats not the original cap

as M4S said only use HI tran oil in the back end ,

I buck rakeed a lot of silage with 1 of these in 1985 & 1986

    best of luck with her

Another thing that would annoy me is how he puts up this nonsense about waiting for grants and don't ring unless you have the money. It makes the seller seem no better than the callers, if you're selling something you need to have patience.

There's no flies on you Orm0nd. Cap isn't original alright.

It needs a right good power washing and a scrub up.

I never sat on a case before yesterday so I'm still figuring out stuff. They are nice and sweet on the road, not a bit bouncy or rough. Reminded me of a mf290 to drive.

I'll mess around with it today. I can find the pto but, I'm not sure what lever controls the 540/1000 pto.

    Wear well there Dave.
And you can now drop into conversations how YOUR tractors cab was designed by Porsche!

there are 2 separate pto shafts 1 above the other , most likely the 1000 shaft has a cover over it , it's a different spline so you can't use the wrong 1.

seals can go there but it's a 10 minute fix

Has it a loader on it tink I mite have seen it on done deal looked like a very good tractor for the money.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 223 ✭✭dave81

Nope no loader. I seen a few that were resprayed and looked like a bargain on done deal, with and without loaders, they were pure muck, total resprayed crap. You won't get anything decent with 80hp for that money.

I'm a fan of buying a thing with original body work.

Use proper coolant and not water is the big one! It was mainly people using straight water that caused the porosity problems. As said good quality hydra/tran oil the ih stuff is very dear there are other brands that are as good and cheaper. Sunroof leaking is common on white roof models some have to be sealed permanently unfortunately. 2wd models are great on the road so you should have no worries there. A cheap but less effective method of fixing the handbrake issue is to make up a catch to hold the foot brake in the depressed position as these have good brake pressure whether the engine is running or not. We have this done on ours just for when we need to keep the brake on for a minute or two, ours has a loader so we just drop that down to the ground and leave it in gear when it's parked up overnight. I know this above method isn't ideal but properly fixing the handbrake is a dear and awkward job and in the end the replacement parts are as prone to failing as the originals.
Finally keep the tank well filled with diesel as all ih's/cases from this era are a divil to get going again if they badly airlock.

Many thanks lads for all the helpful tips. I'll treat her well and note the oil and coolant comments.

I'm not bothered about the handbrake too much, I usually park in gear. Most of the yolkes I grew up with were lucky to have half decent foot brakes.

I'll wash her up, service her and grease her up from head to toe. I'll fix back up the spot lights and get the indicators up and running. I'll seal the sunroof. I'll have her for a long time, as I'll only top and fertilise and do light work with it.

It has less than 2k hours at 1800 rpm. I was concerned that clock had started a new rotation, but judging by unmarked pedals and the way it runs so smoothly, it couldn't have done much.

    Thanks lads.

the centre bushing in the front axel goes in them but it's not a big issue, just a bit of play, get a cartridge of pin & bush grease for there but don't use it anywhere there's bearings

also there's a fuse box on top of the dash @ the right hand side just near the windscreen that gets corroded a clean up & shot of wd40 once in a while
