Hi, just wondering what is the best route from Waterford to Galway.

There seem to be a number of ways to do this journey

I am not looking for the shortest route, I am looking for the route with the best roads - but don't want to add too many extra miles either.

    Any help appreciated.

    Would this route be ok:

Waterford > M9 to Carlow > then "cross country" to Portlaoise and Tullamore > Join M6 to Galway at Kilbeggan

It would be a better route and most likely faster than using the N24 to Limerick. You cant go wrong when its largely motorway.

Yeah, people just presume you are stone mad when you don't go the shortest route to a place, even if the shortest route means crap roads and maybe a longer journey time - due to getting stuck behind a truck or windy roads etc.

I've heard the n24 is not a great road.

I'd even go as far as Naas north on motorway. Cut into clane and Kilcock. Don't do this at rush hour though. M7 pretty mental around Naas that time

Last time I drove that way I took the N24. It's a national road but was fine in my opinion.

For a national road it's very poor in many area's.

+1 I'd also vote for that route. The N80 will take you all the way from Carlow to Tullamore, then take the N52 to Kilbeggan where you'd join the M6 for Galway. Don't go on the last leg of the N80 to Clara and Moate, you'll get to the motorway much faster by heading straight to Kilbeggan from Tullamore.

The N80 is a bit twisty between Mountmellick and the Tullamore bypass but it's a good surface all the way and never gets really busy.
