Ok so as thread title says this evening my car went into limp mode.

There's nothing showing up on the dash car is starting fine but there's no power at all.

Now the glow plug module needs to be changed could this be what is causing it?

I only own the car a few months but so far got egr valve and manifold cleaned out and new glow plugs put in.

In the last two weeks I had it remapped and the dpf cleaned out.

    Anyone any ideas?

I've a motorway journey home from work in the morning not looking forward to it now.

Could be low on coolant. Check all oil and water levels. Make sure to bleed coolant system too.
Its going into limp mode to protect the engine from harm.
    Hope you get sorted.

If I manage to get it home I'll be bringing to my mechanic first as there not far from the house.

Yea I'll try check all of them. I'm thinking it can't be coolant since I also had a coolant leak fixed.

That what I'm afraid of its in limp mode to protect itself and I've to get it home in the morning.

The issue with BMW's is that there are two bleeders for cooling system. I am not thinking there is a leak I think that after a leak was repaired the engine was topped up with coolant, maybe even the bleeders were opened, but after the car heated up and the thermostat opened more coolant may have been required. There is a sensor on the coolant system that will put car into limp mode or safe mode if coolant level drops below this point. I have experienced this before. I would be confident it is one of the main reasons for safe mode, or limp mode.

Are you confident to top up and bleed the coolant system while the car temperature is cool enough?

Proper diagnostic is key, otherwise its guess work. You need someone to pull codes.

Coolant level is fine just checked it there oil level is a bit on the low side though.

Yea I get that and it will be going straight up to my mechanic soon I wake up tomorrow there only a 5 minute drive from the house.

I'm just worried about the drive home.

A quick Google reveals a whole host of potential issues, from DPF, to injectors, to cam position sensors to fuel filter. Seems a few people had mostly DPF issues. Hopefully your mechanic can sort it.

Yea done a Google search myself a lot of them saying blown turbo due to the dpf but only got the dpf cleaned out so hoping that's not the issue.

I had the glow plugs and the glow plug controller done on mine when I had it. The glow plugs have a function where they run hot to help heat up the (absent) DPF, if there is an issue with the glow plugs or controller this feature is disabled. Not sure if this is your issue however.

BTW I would get a fault code reader if I were you, expecially for an e60. Helps self diagnoses massively and its not difficult. I would get the INPA disk and OBD cable from www.bcables.com

So turns out the issue is the dpf again .

Cleared all fault codes and is driving ok for now.

Car is booked in for next Wednesday morning now to get the glow plug module done and the dpf will be taken off and cleaned out will take a few days to do and should hopefully sort the problem out.

Courtesy car for me next week.

Ah bummer. You say "again", what happened in relation to the DPF before?

Bit of a bummer alright but could have been a lot worse.

When I got the remap done it was showing up the dpf was a bit blocked but had no warnings on the dash so got it cleaned out without taking it off but obviously didn't get all the dirt out so now they have to take it off altogether and go at it.

It was blocked before the remap but with extra pressure now it's effecting it more hopefully next week will have it all brand new.

I know you can remove the dpf but have been told of some cars failing n.c.t now without it.

The straight 6 in the 330i certainly gave a lot less hassle but the I'm fairly confident once I get this dpf sorted be good to go.
