Any advice on routing Holyhead to Basingstoke area?

    Hiya folks.

Just wondering has anyone any experience of a long run down South from Holyhead.

Leaving HH about 6.30 am, Saturday morning heading for Basingstoke/Windsor area. Sat navs and the various websites say A55 to M6 down, others say A55, then A5 south then M40 as its quieter than the M6 with less roadworks.

With it being a Saturday morning, I expect it to be quieter and driving time maybe 5 hours?

Anybody any input or advice. Doing it in a Diesel Mondeo so will be setting cruise control and away I go.

    Thanks all.

Shouldn't be too bad but expect trucks and traffic police near to the ports.

I am used to the A55. I know it like the back of my hand. Any idea which route would be better? I understand if you take the mickey, you will get pulled, so will behave, but I do want to get there for 11 if possible.

    take the A55, M6 onto the M40, M25 round to the M3
The A5 is a pain in the rear and although quieter it will be a longer journey

The A5 is a beautiful road through some wonderful scenery, but it will take you a lot longer.

Also pay the M6 toll, it is usually well worth it.
