Well spotted. Gives hope to all who didn't get through last campaign. Time to get into practice with the aptitude tests. Also noted that the Minister indicated that 600 garda would be recruited on an ongoing basis each year to keep up with the demands of the force. Very positive news I believe.

That's if your not already over the Age limit now. The last Campaign took 2 years there could be a lot that applied last time that are now over the age and can't apply which is tough.

I got knocked out at stage 3 last campaign so i was delighted to hear there's another recruitment drive . I will be re applying again . I also applied for the psni just to have my hand in all bowls so to speak. Here's to another chance fingers crossed xxx

Personally I wouldn't waste any money on those study kits. There's no correlation I saw to show any effectiveness and they're disgracefully expensive.

I went to a course the last time and it helped to an extent. I still ended up failing on the verbal reasoning and I knew I made a complete mess of it at the time.

For me I felt like it was just a matter of focus and that's almost what you're getting tested on.
Sounds silly but the only things I did for practice before the aptitude tests were things like sudoku, brain training and practice reading really boring things like random company's business ethos'. All you can do is get your head in the right gear and try not to get distracted. Hope that'll be a bit of help to anyone who'll do those tests in the future.

Ill be 19 next month and have a big interest in joining the guards, would my age be a disadvantage to me?

Out of curiosity. What is the age limit?

    18-35 I believe it is

You need to be a minimum of 18 years of age on applying so anyone born in between jan and nov of 1997 *wow i feel old lol* and a maximum of 35 so anyone born up to jan-nov of 1980 max anything before 1980 wont qualify due to current pension age of 65 you would have to do a spin of a minimum of 25-30yr service . Also anyone under 18 are not legally an adult . Hope that helps .

I'm 24 so I guess I would be eligible to apply. With 600 places opening I feel I would have a good chance.

What exactly are they looking for, what was the feedback from them to unsuccessful applicants last time out?

hi guys correction sorry anyone born between 1980 onward to 1997 is eligible to apply after 1997 you cant as you need to be 18 minimum anyone born before 1980 unfortunately wont get a chance as you need to be 35 or less .

Hope this clarifies the question of age limits

To simplify, if you just turn 18 before the competition closes, you can apply, if you are under 36 (like 35 and 360 days) 35 (like 34 and 360 days) you can still apply. The closing date of the competition decides who can apply.

A colleague of mine is 37 now and only 10 months on the job including training.

Just dropped out there at stage 3, think I am going to give this campaign a miss, the last one took it out of me. With waiting around 2 years only to be told no.

I need to refocus, after the drop out its too soon to try again for me anyway.

You could fly through the apptitude stages, you could be doing stage 3 by early next year and you will be better and have an edge on the rest. If you dont go for this campaign it will be 3 years before you get the chance again. The apptitudes are all still fresh on your mind its only a matter of spending a couple of hours on them then doing them again. Competition wont be as fierce any you will get in top 5k after stage 1 no problem, you have the hard work done already!

What makes you think its going to be at least 3 years before they recruit again? Its only been two years since the last one and the economy is improving. As for the numbers applying, you can be sure there will be at least 20,000.

Well 2 so, not as much chancers will apply this time. Only half passed stage 1 last time which shows the ammount of people that didnt take it serious. They wont bother this time imo. And as you said it has only been 2 years since last campaign not 5 like last time, so there will be less of a backlog of people who want it. Improving economy has always led to less aplicants for the gardai especially with the bad wages.

When do you roughly think that people who apply in November and who make the top band, will get to start training in Templemore.

If the drive opens in November, it will more than likely be open for a month. Last time it opened in December and closed in January with stage 1 then being held in January. First set of students started in September.

So if stage one is December it could be August or July for students to go down. Depends really how quick the stages are and when the college can accommodate new students.

No idea but to be honest if you were to get offered a place before the end of 2016 you'd be doing well, there's still several hundred from the 2013 campaign that are still going through stages and some who have passed all the stages and are waiting to get called to Templemore

I second this, with so many from the 2013 campaign still doing the final stages and also many waiting for vetting to clear it's likely people from a 2015/6 campaign will only get into Templemore early 2017.

As for numbers applying who knows with improvement in the economy more jobs etc I imagine it won't be 25k like the 2013 campaign but anywhere from 15k-20k will apply, especially as the first two stages are pretty effortless and are done from the comfort of your on home, it's the numbers showing up to stage 3 that reveal how many are actually interested.

If you turn 35, before the competition closes, your application will not be accepted. If you get your application in, and you turn 35 afterwards, it is ok, and you can be taken into T'more, even if it takes a considerable time to get through the stages. That is why, in theory, you might find the odd 36 or 37 year old going through the college.
The campaign closing date is important for those on the upper age limit elegibility borderline...miss out on it, even by a day, and it's curtains.

I'm sure this time the number of people applying will be a lot smaller given how desperate the economy was during the last competition. Also, huge numbers of people seemed to drop out after a few stages in the 2013 so the number of people applying is irrelevant really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 210 ✭✭Wannabegarda

Do you think that people that are currently in the interview will be allowed to apply? Cause I remeber that you had to wait six months before you appilied again back in 2008?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 209 ✭✭Copaholic

Hopefully by the closing date of this new recruitment campaign all currently in bands 2 and 3 and progressing will have any interview completed and results known at which stage they will know whether they are still in this campaign or not. if they are still in then no point in applying for the new campaign but if out then everything to gain with the new one. However if the 6 month rule applied it may cause an issue for those just after falling out. I don't see the purpose of the 6 month rule and it may not be applied now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,780 ✭✭✭carzony

It's been advertised as a new campaign which would make me believe the 6 month rule won't apply. I'm sure they'll ask ''have you applied to join Gardai before''.

Earlier in the year the Commissioner stated that AGS was in discussions with PAS about the possibility of having a reserve stream similar to the Irish stream in future recruitment campaigns. I wonder will this have been finalised for the new campaign being launched this month ?

This came up when the commissioner was answering questions from Niall Collins TD in the Dail. It was in the context of garda recruitment and I took it that it could be part of future campaigns. However it could also be organised separately to the general campaign and run internally for reserves. The video is on youtube called "niall Collins on garda recruitment" and the reference is made in about the 12th minute while the commissioner is speaking---listen carefully---you would nearly miss it.

Oh yeah that's interesting but highly unlikely, I am on the waiting list the last 3 years for the reserves and have been told 3 times Id be training this year and they canceled every class. I don't pay any attention to what does be said because it never seems to happen.

In mid November so I was told.

Should be any day now. Out of curiosity does anyone know if the campaign layout will be the same as last time. E.g (2 online aptitudes, 1 in test centre, interview, medical followed by physical) Mostly speculation but just wondering if there's any information out there

Would any of you recommend doing one of those preparation courses by <mod snip> or are they just a rip off?

Rip off. Get <mod snip> home study packs do a stage 1 course and just study your hole off. Takes Pratice. No course is gonna make you good at them

    Is there much of a difference between <mod snip> and <mod snip>?

Might come out closer to January. Just so it has the same structure as the campaign...I also can be wrong!

Id say once public jobs have the last of the interviews out of the way in early december the new campaign will start. It was announced on 13th december 2013 before i think.

How would they know? The only people that would know for sure are the people at the top ie; Minister for Justice, Commissioner etc.

Because they are holding a day course in perpetration for the aptitude exams
