I have the same problem with the Volvo boot, rang the dealership in Naas and there quoting me 98 euro just to diagnose the problem. Anyone know of anywhere in the Naas/Dublin area that could look at this for me. Seems very expensive by going to the dealer..

    Is it a new S40?

I had the same problem. Can be a number of issues, including the switch getting wet and corroded or the wiring harness becoming frayed.

Can you describe the symptoms a little better? Can you open it with the key? Do you hear the latch trying to work? Any other electrical issues with it?

    As above,

It is either the switch ( at the number plater lights ) or frayed wiring loom, both went on my '06 S40. Easy enough to do yourself. Step by step guide here for the wiring loom which I used to do it myself.

Very common problem with the S40 if yours is the same model as mine.

If your boot won't open, you'll have to crawl into the boot to short 2 pins together with a screwdriver to get it open...

If it's the boot lid wiring harness, it should be available form a Volvo main dealer. They go often enough for them to keep spares on hand. Should be around €40. An hours labout in a main dealer will be about €100, but can be done by anyone who is reasonable mechanically minded.
