No harm ring your bank and tell them you will be away, so they don't consider any use of your card(s) in Amsterdam as suspicious and block them.

A photocopy of the main page of your passport is also handy to have.

A couple of phrases / words in the local language is always good.
Makes interaction with the locals easier, and leads to a better experience.

I never inform the bank when I am abroad...seems a lot of hassle if you travel frequently. I assume they would contact you first rather than immediately block your card which seems very extreme.

It's a matter of alarm bells going off because of uncharacteristic usage. If you go abroad frequently you never need to inform them but if you haven't been out of the country in years then they may block any foreign usage, especially ATM withdrawals unless you inform them in advance.

It's possible that they will spot you buying an airline or ferry ticket on the card and that may count as advance notice (of a foreign trip) but say you give your friend cash to buy the flights on his credit card, you go to Amsterdam for a weekend (your first foreign trip in years) and shove your card into an ATM, it may be refused.
