I have a new medical card for my family. I rang a local dentist re. seeing my 6 year old regarding a filling in a tooth. The lady told me to go to the dental clinic which I dually did. The lady there told me she could not help unless he was referred from the school that I would have to go private. Is there anything else I can do? Thanks in advance.

Its weird sandra06 ok. I would have believed that the children would come first when it comes to health. But it seems that the state looks after the adults on a medical card but the children have to wait till they reach 16 does not make sense. But than what makes sense in this country anymore.

Can you not just avail of the school dentist?

My child is in first class and the lady in the HSE said that the school dentist was doing second class and we would have to wait.

Register with a medical card dentist for yourself and ask if they will give you a reduction for your child's filling. Some are accommodating and some are not but nothing to lose from asking. You could also approach the Community Welfare Officer and explain the situation. Anything is better than waiting till the school dentist sees him next year and then another wait for the filling. Infections can develop. What crazy thinking these cutbacks are. Good luck.

Depending on where you are you could try the local HSE clinic. In Carlow there is an emergency clinic 2 mornings a week.My child has a broken tooth and we were told he would have to wait to be seen by the school and referred. However we were able to get him seen in the clinic straight away as he was in pain.

I was told they would see children in an emergency, so bring the child in if there really bad and they should do something..
