We are looking at buying a Second Hand Car from a dealer.

I have seen one which we may be interested in online but it around 4 hours drive from where we live and is listed as €POA so I don't know if it is in our Budget.

Can I just call the Dealer and ask what the Price is ? I don't want to travel if it is well out of our Budget.

If they are not willing to put a price on the ad just move on, that's what I do,
Loads of cars for sale without putting up with that sh1t.

Also can anyone tell me what the difference is between the Price listed and then it says "Retail Price" usually a higher figure in the description below.

    Thanks in advance.

if it's listed as POA, close the tab and keep browsing. you're only offering yourself on a plate to a potential seller.

there are only 3 reasons for listing as POA.

1- the seller (usually private) knows the car is overpriced compared to similar models, so they list it as POA in an attempt to do a Rolls Royce/ J.P. Morgan "if you have to ask, you can't afford it" type of sale.

2- the seller (usually motor dealer) want's to tot up the price on a case by case basis having met you first. as a basic example; if he knows the car cost him €5k and he needs to sell for €6k minimum and you turn up with holes in your shoes looking like a poor man who can scrape together 6k he'l sell for that to get the sale, but if you look like you have a few quid to burn or give any tell tales that you want the car badly, he will adjust the price upwards accordingly.

3- the seller (private or dealer) want it to appear in all car price range searches, so if people are searching for cheaper/ more expensive vehicles of the same make/ model, his will always show up in a search. an extremely poor marketing technique. a dead giveaway of a sloppy salesman.

    i think you mean listings like ;

    straight/ cash price €5000
    retail €6500

the first (lower price) is if you walk in and buy the car with cash, no trade in. it usually means little or most likely no further price haggling.

the latter (higher price) is usually the price if you have a car to trade in against the car you are looking at.

there must be some kind of demand for this kind of sales practice although i don't really enjoy it myself. it screams an unpleasant dealing to me.

we understand obviously that a sale including a trade in is more work for the dealer and it takes him longer to get his money out of a particular car in most cases - but having an increased trade in price/ decreased cash deal price pretty is barefacedly telling you we are already screwing you on the trade in deal and that's before we low ball you on the price of your trade in too.

admittedly, if you do have a car to trade in, the "cost to change" is the figure you really need to watch to see how good the deal is, but things like "POA" and "cash pricing" give you an idea of how bumpy a ride you are in for.

there are also situations where it may be much better off for you to not trade in your existing car and sell or dispose of it privately if you have one.

what are you driving at the moment and what are you looking at buying?

Thanks a mill for such detailed replies.

We are not trading anything in as it is my Husband's car we are looking to upgrade. His car is 19 years old and we intend to just scrap this car. We are looking for a VW or Skoda or Opel Estate Diesel car. 2011/2012.

if you post a link to the particular car you are thinking of driving to we could advise if it's viewing/ what you should be looking at paying for it etc.

where in the country are you? what's your budget, roughly?
