Anyone here a member in Ashbourne. Thinking of joining with a mate for 2016. Just wondering what it's like as a club as far as getting out for comps etc. Any insight would be much appreciated

nice course and club but I thought the course was very short.

If you live in Ashbourne, then it's a great option.

Did you consider any other courses in the area?

    Hi Flexicon,

I joined Ashbourne in 2012. Its a great course and welcoming club. There is a Men's Invitational every wednesday and Members comps on Saturdays and Sundays. The Sunday timesheet (Early half) always fills up when released on a Tuesday but I've never seen anyone waiting come 6pm Saturday so plenty of room for everyone.

In the Summer there are a good few comps run on Mondays and Fridays also a few of which I was lucky enough to get out in this year.

Socially Its a great place my wife and 2 of my kids have joined after me, Through the summer there is a Friday night social which is great craic with a scramble or team game and a pint or coffee after. A couple of these are themed night and include food and music (pics on the Facebook page).

I wouldn't be a good enough golfer to critique the course but a good sign is that work and improvement is always going on.

I have a couple of green fees I won in a raffle if you'd like to try a round I'd be happy to help you out. or if you would like to enter one of the Wednesday Invitationals I'm sure I could swing a half day off work. PM me on either.

    Regards
    Mark

    Cheers for the reply Mark

I was actually out for a round yesterday which was organised by Ciara in the office.

Really enjoyed the round and thought the course was excellent particularly the back 9 which had a lovely flow to it.

Glad to hear such positive feedback about the members as it has had a reputation locally of being a bit snobby in the past

At the price on offer at the moment it will be hard to pass it up

Nice enough place for a round, agree a bit on the short side.

Looking at joining up somewhere in the general area next year, but refuse to pay money to any club that discriminates price wise based on age profile. So for that reason, it's not for me.

You'll be doing well to find a club that doesn't offer some sort of under 30 discount at this stage. Don't think it's a discrimination against older players just a realisation that people in their late 20s have less disposable income due to buying a house, getting married etc. I think it's a great way to keep people in the game.

Totally agree, I wish it was around during my 20's would have kept me playing I think.

The average age in my club is 57 and that's young compared to other clubs. It's a major issue for golf in general that young people are not taken up the game or play other sports instead or family issues come first at that stage of life. So the idea of the discount is to get them to start young and then hold onto them for life which is what usually happens to members when they join a club and enjoy it.

I join my club at 27 (paid 10k) and I'm still a member today at 41 and currently the Treasurer of the Club. I still get called the kid in the club and I'm glad I joined, but if it had being cheaper at 20, I would have joined earlier.

These discounts for young people won't last forever by the way, once people start re-joining clubs as full members they will look to cut-back in the discount memberships categories within golf clubs, but they are the future off golf. I personally reckon you'll see a 10% growth in golf during 2016 and each year afterwards. We only offer 50 memberships in this category.

It is discrimination in my book, and the general definition,

"....unequal treatment of an individual (or group) based on certain characteristics, including, Age......"

People who went through the boom and bust, and paid topped dollar at the height of things, but had to let membership lapsed to put kids through collage etc..are now when they have a chance to return are again being asked to pay the most.

I guess in strict terms your right and I fully appreciate your angle , but as a self employed person I am discriminated against when it comes to healthcare and taxation in the name of fairness to those less well off. Just as in this case I'm ok with that if its for the good of the game (or the country).

If you want to go strictly by the definition then the ones who are receiving the discount are also "suffering" from discrimination. That's why it's usually better to use words in the same way most people commonly interpret and use them as opposed to the strict dictionary definition. After all this forum is a means of communication not a court of law.
