Physio - help!

    Hi guys,

I started couch 25k during the summer and reached my goal in September.

I was experiencing a lot of pain and cramping in my calves during running so went and got my gait analysed (feel rotten saying it!!!) and bought a new pair of runners for €135. They haven't helped - at all!

I'm doing all my stretches and stuff but the problem isn't going away so a running friend suggested that I visit a Physio to have a look...

Does anyone have any suggestions whether or not this would appropriate?? If so, any suggestions on Physio's??

Ben Doyle - Ranelagh Physiotherapy Clinic (http://www.thephysiocompany.com/clinic/ranelagh/) - this guy helped me to fix my back in less than 2 months - at the beginning I couldn't cycle more than 45 km without terrifying pain in lower back and less than 2 months later I finished full Ironman race without any lower back issues...

Newbie Calf pain sorts itself out after awhile + no need to spend over €65 on a pair of runners.

I realise the runners may have been a mistake but the calves were getting worse and worse. It was taking me 2 days to recover. Of course I expected some initial pain but this cannot be normal!

It could be a case that you are calf muscles are weak or you could be injured. The best thing to do is make an appointment with a physio.

Get to a physio before you do anything else, in case you might be injured. You'll be asked to describe your pain (general dull ache, sharp localised pain, that kind of thing) and make sure to mention if you're getting any pins and needles. Don't be surprised if the physio assesses your ankles, knees, hips, and even your lumbar spine too. They'll probably try and provoke your symptoms briefly so that they can get an idea of what's causing it. They might give you a different exercise programme to follow, perhaps you're doing too much too soon. Good luck!

Well - I went to the physio and apparently I was suffering from compartment syndrome. I've been given a series of streches and planking to do and am also undergoing dry needling in my calves. No running for at least another few weeks!!

Have you tried using a foam roller on your calves?
    Well worth an investigation!
    Just a thought....

I'm sure I'll be advised to do that. I'm still attending the physio and will be for a few weeks. She says she has to do a lot of dry needling but can't do it all at once as I wouldn't be able to walk out!! I had it done on both calves, in the same spot, on Tuesday and the tightness is gone today. She's going to work on the outer calves next week...that's where I experience the most pain when running so not particularly looking forward to it! :(

Also - would you recommend a simple foam roller on one of the trigger point grid rollers?!

TK Maxx do the grid rollers at a reasonable price (I think I paid about 20 euro), Elvery's and most running stores will have them too but a bit more pricey. Go for the grid one, I find the simple ones useless, also, The Stick is quite good too, especially for calves.

Can I ask what the phsyio did to diagnose compartment syndrome?

I'm not really sure. We had a chat about my symptons. He had me do some stretches, checked my flexibility then gave me a massage on my calves.
