We moved house recently and noticed there was several exposed electrical wires. We asked the landlord to get them checked out to make sure they were safe and not live. We were told they were perfectly safe. Then started having problems with lighting and one shower not working. We got an electrician out and it turns out the wires have been live this whole time. There's some in the garden where a group of about 10, 9/10 year old kids have been outside playing. the shower could have been dangerous to use this whole time. Someone could have easily died because of this if they had touched one of these wires we were told were not live but actually were *<snip>

Ask the landlord when was the wiring last checked, he should have a "period inspection report".
